Hi, can anyone help me - I seem to be getting 2 different stories for my Pajero. It has 300,000km on the clock and I am guessing that the Cam Belt or Timing Chain guide is needing to be replaced but I am not sure if it is has a timing chain or cam belt as I have had conflicting advice from auto spares shops. Can anyone confirm? It is one of those models that I often get incorrrect spares for as it was the last of its range. Normally the correct spares are from the 2001-2006 range.
Also will we be needing to take both the front and head covers off to get to it? Any other advice would really be appreciated.
Lastly, if anyone can tell me where I can get a second hand tail light? I can't seem to find any pajero's in any scrap yards! Mitsubishi's quote is rather expensive, so I would rather get second hand if I can.

Morning.
Diesel have timing chains, and petrol's have timing belts, end of story.
Unless the chain is making a noise it can last for many thousands of kilos.
If you want to change the chain, always do the guides and tensioner at the same time.
Never works just doing half a job.

Thanks for posts. I have figured out the timing chain part but can anyone tell me when the timing chain needs to be changed or should be changed? My Pajero has just over 300,000 km's onthe clock.

Hello
Get the guide at the top of the chain checked, this is a known issue on earlier Pajero's, not too sure it has bee sorted on later models?

Timing chains have not got a specific lifespan and are generally not a problem on Gen3 or Gen4. In Aus there was a recall and an inspection on the timing chain tensioner and for some reason we (in SA) were not included. There is a measurement they take down at the tensioner and it appears that if this is over a specific amount the tensioner and sometimes the chain was replaced. I do not know why they should have had a recall and not us.

PeterPot,
Asked Mitsubishi about the Gen 4 timing chain and the Aus recall. This was their answer:
"Kindly note that we do not have such a campaign for the local model Pajero. The campaign applies to the Australian specification Pajero models only."
So maybe some differences due to engine specifications? Who knows.
Cheers,

My 2005 3.2 DiD is on 337,000kms and I had the top timing chain guide replaced. Timing chain itself still in good condition, even after all those km's.
