Gen2 SWB Rear Lockers

Wed Oct 05, 2016 1:36 pm

I desperately need help with my '98 Pajero 3.0 v6 SWB

I need to install a rear difflock system and I have no idea where to start.
I got a quote for ARB Air Lockers but as you all may know it costs between R22 000 and R26 000 which for any normal human being is way too much.

Is there any other/cheaper options for people who is not a millionaire with a budget of round about R6 000 - R8 000?

Thanks a million

I have the same issue, until now I've managed fine without any lockers.

The only alternative I could find is to look at scrapyards for a diff with a locker. Some models came out with the diff lock, if the ratios are the same you can just replace it. There is still some work then to get it to work but the most expensive part is then bought. If you are lucky you could exchange your diff and get a discount.

I know there's a place in Pretoria that asks R6000.00 for the rear diff when you exchange yours. Problem is you don't know if the diff is actually working. They are usually the Pajeros with the wider fenders, which as far as I know is the 3.5 V6. Ratios differ but not too much that it will cause damage to your car.
But then the real problem comes in.
You get different ones, some use compressed air...
Now all the places that i found that have the diffs, you need to buy the compressor as well. which sets you back quite a bit...
A quote that I got is R15 000.00 for the entire set, meaning if you put R5000.00 extra you can just as well install the ARB air lockers.
When buying the ARB you are certain of getting parts when something breaks and atleast you get a 2 year warranty on them.
But saving R20 000.00 + is not as easy for most people including me

I think the best answer is to find someone with the same model whose diff has failed. These diffs are pretty strong but with old oil and / or never serviced (you should change diff oil every 100 000 km or sooner if you do a lot of water crossings) you have a good candidate (crown wheel & pinion plus bearings normally suffers before anything else). The great thing is you then have no problems with ratios because you use your own crown wheel & pinion and the wearing parts are from your own diff. All you need is the locking system in the diff and there are some external components to operate the diff which will have to be sourced (fit on body above diff). I have a Gen4 and am on the lookout for a Gen3 diff with difflock that has failled if anyone comes across one.

Being a failed diff you should get it cheap and then you need to swap everything over which needs some specialised knowledge / experience.

You do get chinese clones of the arb locker at a fraction of the cost. The guys from Australia and new zealand seem to write good reports on them but I havent heard of anyone locally fitting one yet

Ill have to check this evening when I'm home. If I remember correctly it was advertised on ebay just as an rd34 air locker.

I've had a look, the part number was Rd154, but I can no longer find it advertised via ebay. I can only find them advertised on Alibaba: https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/ ... 03694.html
