3.2 did Transmission problem

Pajero 3.2 Did automatic (2005)
340ks on the clock.

Suddenly we are experiencing a bad gear change from 2nd to 3rd accompanied by a knock. When changing gears it seems as if the engine is experiencing an excessive load.
I changed the transmission oil via the correct procedure of pumping the oil out whilst the engine was idling, it took 30 seconds, I the dumped the remaining oil by removing the transmission pan. I replaced the filter and filled to the correct level with Diaqueen Sp III from Mitsubishi. The problem still persists.

A reputable gearbox company said there was a Transmission failure We replaced the complete Transmission (which included the 4x4 transfer unit) this replacement Transmission has only done 150K kilos. The problems still persists!!

Another reputable dealer said it was the back diff mountings. Rubbers/bushes were replaced and still the problem persists.

I have noticed the following symptoms:

• When I change from P to D or R the engine revs up by 200 rpm, it seems to jerk into gear, it never did this before the issue started.
• The Transmission does change up and down however the 2nd to 3rd gear change is violent.
• No signs of overheating, engine or Transmission.
• The transmission will do same in auto and tiptonic.
• If I floor the accelerator it seems to change better.
• Once the car is in 4th and 5th it runs like a dream!!!

I’m sure it is sensor related and the last thing I want to do is dig out the ECU!

Please any assistance will be gladly appreciated.

Gen 3 Transmission problem

I was just going to start a similar thread, but came across this one.
Having almost the same symptoms.

Mine is a 2001 3.5, I suppose its the V5A51 transmission, but symptoms are the same.

Since I bought my car (drove 70K in 6 years with it till now) it sometimes had a problem in taking several seconds to engage into R or D at the first run, and mostly engaging with a hard bump. This is mostly noticeable in cold mornings, as soon as the transmission warms up a little or in summer there is no problem.
I researched about the problem and assumed it is something called sticky valve, where a valve gets stuck and while building up pressure it opens abruptly and hence the bump. When it warms up it moves freely.
I changed ATF (Mitsu SP3) twice since then, first time with the filter and nothing changed.

I was living with it this way avoiding to open the trans for bigger repairs, till this week another similar problem occurred, but when shifting to 2nd.
When its time to shift to 2nd the car brakes itself, one time even so hard that the rear wheels blocked as if I have pulled the hand brake.
Its like trying to go into gear and couldn't, after 2 sec of braking it returns to 1st again. after several trials either it has warmed up and start working normally, or it forces itself into limp mode and drives on 3rd till I turn the engine off and restart.

As soon as I drive less than 1 km it is already shifting as it should.

Changed the whole ATF to give it a try, although it has been changed only 16K Km before. Th fluid came out dark brown, even darker than the previously released fluid that had made 50K.
I flushed the system and poured in fresh fluid, but nothing changed.

Any advice where to look for ??
