Rust in the sunroof frame

Fix in progress. Ching had to build a new 'lip'. The frame was very badly rusted.

Ching asked me R1800 to fix my sunroof.

Hi Guys,

For the others enquiring about rust in the sunroof.

I had the rust removed from my sunroof from a private Panelbeater in the Ottery area.
His name is Ching, his tel number 072 359 9161.
He did tell me I will eventually need to replace the frame.

He was extremely reasonable and from what I can see he has done a great job. The workmanship is very neat.
I have only used him this once but I was very impressed with him and his work.

I'm also considering have Ching take care of some other cosmetic touch ups - anyone have an idea of his quality for that sort of thing? (got some scraped plastics and few small dings on various panels)

My sunroof 2008 Model was also rusted,panelbeater took it out,treat it with rust converter and then cover the sunroof frame with fibre glass that the water can't get to the frame,it is now 6 Months ands all seems to be fine,however the rubbers shape around the glass wasn't that good anymore and managed to buy a good 2nd hand rubber where as the agents charged R3720.00 exclusive for a new rubber and the panelbeater sealed it propper.

Are there any updates on this topic?
My 2008 sunroof also has some rust in the front corner above the driver's seat.
Not leaking but better to fix before it get's worse.
The rubber surround seems very hard and difficult to prise lose. so I don't want to try in case I damage it.
I had expected it to be more flexible but perhaps it has hardened due to sunlight.
Anyone have any specific experience in the rubber and how to remove t without damage?

However he he needs the use of a non-rusted frame for about a week to make the mold.

Any thoughts on where to borrow one?

The rust on the Frame is a common issue for Pajero owners.

It's a good idea if he can make a mould and produce epoxy fibreglass components from it.
I had considered doing the same.
However getting access to a sunroof frame to make a mould from might be problematic - especially if the OEM frame gets damaged during the manufacture of the mould.
I assume it will be a commercialised product so perhaps he should try and find one from a breaker's yard?
Or simply buy a new one if he intends to make $$$.

The moulding would need to be made with a high 'heat distortion resin' due to exposure to high temperatures and the weight of the glass it must hold.
If he requires any further info on this just let me know.

Have you thought about 3D Printing ?. They would scan the original and print you a new one, cost ?, i wouldn't know or where to look, but it might be an alternative and a better finished product. Pretty certain there such companies in and around South Africa.

I have the same rust problem. The frame can be restored however it appears that the rubber seal is the problem. I understand sun roofs are sold as an assembly including all the components which can only cost mega bucks! Any suggestions and also a good repairer in KZN? KenM

Maybe have a look at these people. I recently did my engine compartment with new sealing rubber and clips. They are very helpful and could steer you in the right direction. Prices are very reasonable compapred to the stealers.

They will also customise to suit your needs. Phone call or e-mail them. You never know.

Hoping to revive an old thread as I have not been able to fix this since diagnosis two years ago..and that someone can recommend a repairer or cheaper replacement part for the rusty frame.....

I am currently located in Gauteng (Bryanston) if anyone can recommend a competent panelbeater who can possibly help with this. Alternatively if anyone knows of a useable frame/sunroof (2007 LWB BK) or cheaper alternatives.

The lip on the frame is rusted away in the back right hand corner, causing rubber seal to come off, and sunroof to get stuck without closing properly. Someone who can do fine TIG welding might be able to rebuild the lip?
