Pajero Gen4 low beam lights

I bought a second-hand 2011 3,2D GLS Exceed Pajero in last year. From day 1, the low beams were very poor and one basically had to at least have the driving lights on and use main beams whenever possible. I have compared my vehicle side by-side to other Pajeros of the same model and year and it is chalk and cheese!

I travel a lot away from home and have not had the time to resolve the issue. Now I am trying to but am getting nowhere at a great speed.

The globes are D2S which I replaced with new during the past week. This has made no difference. I have been to a number of local auto-electricians in the area (I live outside Sedgefield between Knysna and George and have tried the auto electricians in George) and none of them have ever encountered such a situation and have not been able to help (reactions have ranged from helplessness to advising me to replace the complete headlamp assemblies!!) We have checked the earths and the voltage at the fuses is what it should be.

I was thinking that it could be the two low beam ballasts. But why would both be failing. The right hand beam is slightly brighter than the left side. I went to the local Mitsubishi dealer yesterday to enquire about the availability and cost of a ballast. R12000+ each. And no, this is not a typo.....

I am now a bit depressed about the whole thing as one cannot actually drive safely at night. Any advice from out there? I would prefer to find the fault and not fit aftermarket lights such as LED's as a solution.

HentievJ, have you sorted out your low beam problem and if so what did you do? I am also not very happy with my lights. I am hoping to install these HID (?) lights if there are no reason not to.

Hi Chris. Not yet. But I have spoken to somebody who seems to maybe have an answer. I just have not been able to take my vehicle to him as I am in Sedgefield and he is in Alberton. I plan to drive up in the next two months or so.

His name is Arnold Venter runs Mitsi Tech. His contact number is +27764020046.

He comes highly recommended and seems to be knowledgeable.

Hentie, they service my vehicle and I stay close by. I'll get in touch and will let you know. I am leaving for Namibia in a weeks time and hope to have improved lights prior to that trip, although I don't plan to travel in the dark

Hi I have also tried to improve the lights by fitting LED's purchased from Extreme Lights in Stellenbosch. That was a total disaster on both my cars, 2010 Pajero GLX and a 2014 Honda Ballade, I could not see 5m infront of the car on high beam. I returned the lights and was refunded.
I normally drive with the driving lights on all the time.

Hi Piet (and anybody else interested)

The problem for me is not trying to improve my low beam lights...It is to get them to spec. When I park my vehicle next to another exact same model. there is a marked difference in low beam intensity. There seems to be something wrong with the current lights. I have the correct globes fitted (D2S). So the issue must be caused by something else that I am unable to identify at this stage. I simply cannot believe that Mitsubishi would build and supply a vehicle with low beam lamps that are so dim. If it had been so, every single Pajero owner would have complained.

In the meantime I am also driving with the driving lights on. I am eagerly awaiting feedback from Chris after his visit to Arnold Venter in Alberton

Hentie, I’m going to Mitsu tech this afternoon. Will let you know

However, you may have a different problem as you drive a GLS. Mine is GLX. I thought one of the cosmetic differences is the lights

What did Arnold say?

I took my car to Mitsu tech and replaced the low and high beam globes with Xenon globes. It makes a huge difference to the GLX's lighting. As I have said before, I don't know if this is Hentie's problem as he drives a GLS which is suppose to have xenon lights anayway

Hi guys I am following your posts with interest. I have a similar problem with a 2013 Exceed (HID) low beams. I have also compared my low beams with a similar car and noticed my lights are not that bright. When I switch my lights on they seemed to be far brighter for a fraction of a second and then dim back to the normal "not so good" brightness. What I found on the Osram website is that the Mitsubishi have change the system from 04/2013. Before this date the system require 85V 35w DS2 globes and from 04/2013 onward 42V 35w DS4 globes if one look at the globe specifications. I still can't belief that this could be the issue and would like to know the final reason for the problem. I have read a lot on the HID lights/problems but realy could not get a solution to this specific problem.
I will keep on watching the posts.
