Gen 4 Radio replacement options

Sun May 20, 2018 11:59 pm

Some interesting new units becoming available these days (china imports I suspect)... but they look pretty cool. I'm also keen on the rear cam / wifi / bluetooth dongle integration so I dont have to have a phone measuring the stuff all the time.

Anyone had any luck with these?

I really do believe these Android units offer an exiting option. I did quite a bit of reading on them while I was searching for something decent to stick in my Isuzu and would most probably have pulled the trigger if I had kept my Isuzu.

Do you have the Rockford system in your Pajero?
How does replacing it with an Android one affect sound quality?
Have you been running the diagnostics on a seperate phone for long now?

I ordered a similar (could be excatly the same) unit from Stop Shop for $400.00 including shipping. Import duties was another R860.00 delivery took 13 days.
The unit works with the Rockford system and the installation was all plug and play. Took me 2 hour to install, but that included the rear view camera and some cleaning under the panels. I put Tom Tom maps on it for R200.00
The sound qaulity is down slightly, but the GPS, DVR, rear view camera and phone option makes it worth while. The kids love the DVD option...of course.
The rear view camer supplied fits the mounting excatly, running the cables is a bit of a pain.

Well worth it, and was more quoted more than twice the price by local shops.

I looked into this a while back and all those android units are laggy and i wont be able to live with that. From what i read and watched the Sony XAV-AX100 is the best and around 360USD, does not have a cd player, the more expensive one has that. Also you can buy an extra plug in thing that gives you offline GPS.

Thats the one i am getting for my 3rd gen

Went though the same exercise 2 months ago (though I have the GLX so no need for integration with the Rockford system).

I wanted a head unit with Android Auto and ended up getting this shipped from the US:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B075S ... UTF8&psc=1
along with a parking brake bypass
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00VK ... TF8&psc=1

Got the fascia trim plate
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/2-Din-S ... c4dJOjX8G
and wire harness connector
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Car-Ste ... 4c4dJOjX8G
for cheap from China.

Quite enjoying Android Auto (Apple CarPlay also supported). Though you do need to plug your phone in via USB, the connection is reliable, doesn't have the volume issues that Bluetooth does and being able to see Google Maps from phone on big display is priceless.

DO you experience any lag on your going through the screen like a cheap phone? i saw videos of that head unit and noticed a bit of lag, just want to know what your experience is regarding that.

Hi Reino

Yep there is some lag. Definitely not a perfect system.

Less frustrating than working via a regular bluetooth connection though.

Would you like me to make a video to see?

Cheers
Dirk
