Does anyone know the part number for a 2006 Pajero with a 4M41 engine? (3.2 DiD diesel engine.) Any recommended suppliers outside of the Dealer network.

Hi Mike

The 3.2 Starter is a bit of a nightmare. What is wrong with your starter?
Normally it is only the brushes and occasionally the solenoid. It is a simple fix.

Hello GraemeM,
I have an automatic Gen 4 3.2 DiD and have worries about being stuck in the bush with a failed starter.
Why do you say this starter is a nightmare:
- is it difficult to remove in the field?
- should I carry spare brushes
-can the brushes be changed in the field or is some heavy soldering required?
-part number for the brushes?
- are there warning signs of impending starter failure?

@ Tunja - did you get the contact for the aftermarket starter supplier?

I had to refurb my starter twice in the 5 years that I owned my 2004 DiD SWB.

Both times the symptoms were a slightly slower / longer crank time on starting that seemed like the battery was going flat. On both occasions, an auto elec just opened it up, cleaned it out and installed a new brush kit. I can't recall exactly, but think it cost me between R1.5 - 2k each time.

I believe these starters get gunked up because they sit under the fuel filter and when your mechanic removes the filter some of the diesel spills onto the starter, which over time causes issues. Solution - put a plastic packet over your fuel filter when removing it, or remove the entire filter bracket from the car when removing it.

Here's a thread I started on this topic a while back:

The auto elec cleaned starter and refitted. Starts like a new car now....R800 later. ;) Yes it does sound like a battery going faulty. Joe,

Hi Guys

Sorry for the delayed response.

These starters get diesel on them from filter changes. The brushes and the solenoid give problems because of this. Both of these are easy to fix and replace. The starter can be removed in 10 minutes even in the bush. Fitting new brushes or the solenoid can be done in about 20 minutes.

I replaced my solenoid and brushes, the parts cost me R300 labour involved two coffees made by me.

I hope this helps.
PS the starter is so much easier to take out from the bottom....
