Rev counter works intermittently

Rev counter 1994 2.8 diesel Pajero: My rev counter works intermittently. Whilst I am driving it drops to zero and then after a while it jumps up to what ever rev I am doing. Any ideas or experiences?

I have a similar problem. It worked intermittently for a while and then stopped working entirely.

I was told there is a wire that goes from the diesel pump to the gauges, but so far I have had it to 2 auto electricians and the guys who rebuilt my diesel pump but nobody has been able to fix it.

I'm really hoping someone can shed some light on this

I got the same issue on my 3.8 petrol so it is not just diesel vehicles .
