17" AT Tyres

Mon Jun 22, 2009 11:15 am

I'm now ready to fit OME and a set of 265x65x17 AT tyres. I gave up the idea of MT tyres after some okes warned me about serious noise levels and it wouldn't really suit my application. Which 17" AT's are you guys running? Currently I'm looking at Coopers ATR, Duellers 694 and the new Wrangler AT/SA. Any experience with these?

I ran D694's in 16' on my Pajero. Good tyre for the price but I got 2 punctures on them (maybe unlucky) and only about 50000km life. They became more noisy as the thread got less but was in general very quiet.

I prefer BFG's but the 17' sizes are very restrictive. If I recall correctly the closest BFG is 265/70/17 which means a slight increase in height and the resultant things, good and bad, that goes with it.

I also had the 694's on the Colt. Seemed ok but they were starting to wear seriously after 30k km. I don't want to up the size and change the ratios for towing. As it is the torque converter works most of the time. The GY AT/SA has interesting new technology, but the price is steap, R2700/tyre :o . Coopers ATR R2100/tyre.

Fitted 694's again, I had to at R1600.00/tyre. Everything else is over R2100.00. Apparently I incorrectly rotated the tyres on the Colt (back to front only and no cross-over) and with suspect wheel alignment, had wear on the outside edges. The car feels great with AT rubber. Next up are Iron Man and air helpers on Thursday.

I have just ordered a set of BFG AT at R2400,00 per tyre. I have lost confidence in the Bridegstones as the sidewalls are very soft. BFGs have a 3 ply sidewall.

I know someone that just bought a second hand Pajero fitted with 17 inch BFG tyres(265/70/17 I think), just fitted. He is not an off-road fanatic and want the standard road tyres in standard size back. Tyres are almost brand new. Ernest how good is your current set? He might just swop them out or sell at say R1800 a tyre? This is in Centurion/Midrand area.

Any takers?
