Pajero 4x4 not climing a hill

Tue Aug 07, 2012 2:25 pm

Hi.
i,m new to the Pajero club and are driving a 2003 pajero 3.2 LWB DI-D. Recently i took it to the 4x4 track to play. Unfortunately i couln,t get up the first hill. I selected 4LLC and try to climb out but got stuck halfway and had to free backwards. The vechile was just reving away but not going anywhere, can there be anything wrong with the drive train? or did i do anything wrong
regards

It all depends if you were doing something wrong....

But, When you selected 4LLC, did all four lights and a little one in the middle come on?

If so, were you possibly in a cross axle situation?

Do you have a diff lock fitted?

Did the car drive in 2H?

I went on a trip this last weekend. First trip in my first 4x4 (report pending I know). We did plenty climbs and diff lock is amazing. Failed with out difflock then switch on the difflock and climbed with ease.

If you don't have difflock then yoy prob have traction controll, cant comment on that.

Hi Willem,

Let us know where you are and I am sure a nearby member would be happy to give you a quick pajero 4x4x intro (I was going to suggest a crash course but decided that would not be a good way of describing this).

Hi Willem,

Also let us know which 4x4 track - I'm sure some of us will have been there before and can relate experiences.

Cheers
Tom

Willem,

Welcome to the club!

If you engage in 4LLC and all that happens is engine noise and no performance, it tells me that something is wrong. Pajero's are monsters, especially in 4LLC. Were your wheels spinning? If yes, you obviously did not have traction, which indicates wrong tyres or tyre pressure. If it stalled, it indicates too little momentum. If it stood still, not spinning, but idling, it tells something in the transmission failed...

You should never free backwards after stopping halfway up the hill - always use the engine, but that is a different topic.

I really think you should have your car checked out, though.

Regards,
Anton

A 2003 model should have difflock - it pre-dates the T/C models.

Willem,
I suspect your car didn't go into 4LLc (flashing wheel lights)and I suspect you didn't have the box in N when you selected 4LLc and didn't engage the difflock. I also suspect you do what every other red blooded male in SA does: you don't read the manual :D .

If my suspicions are unfounded, then I profusely apologise and recommend you get the Pajero checked out by an expert.

A DiD in 4LLc and with difflock engaged will drive up a brick wall coverd in slimy mud.

I had the same problem. My left front cv was stripped. So make sure the 4*4 system engaged
I had a noticeable lack of performance on flat surface after selecting 4h
I also pulled up the hand brake while in 4h try to move forward nd heard funny sounds from the car.
