Gen 3 Pajero Recovery points

Tue Nov 26, 2013 8:12 pm

I have tried to read up on recovery points but it seems I'm getting more confused the longer I read.

I have a Mitsubishi Pajero 2006 GLX LWB

From what I understand the front recovery points fitted by Mitsubishi are sufficient.

At the rear however I cant seem to get any clear ansers as to what recovery points other fitted or what would be sufficient.
I currently have a BTM tow bar fitted with what looks like recovery points to me.

The plate it self is 8 mm or 10 mm it started raining when I measured and connected to the chassis with 2 x 8.8 bolts it is however bent 90 degrees from where it is connected to the chassis.
There is also a 10 mm round bar welded into the bend

1) Are these recovery points ?

2) Are the TOW BAR RECOVERY HITCH adapters that fit into the removable square tube any good ?

3) If they are not suitable not what are the options ?

I would use them as recovery points but both at once with a bridle to spread the load.

Is that towbar only fitted with 2 bolts on each side? If so I would keep an eye on the chasis as that setup puts tremendous strain on that area and they are known to tear there if used under strain like off road towing. There are better dedigned towbars that also extend up next to the chassis rail and use an additional 2 bolts on the side, giving 4 on each side, which is much better.

Gents,

The recovery point seems to be seperate from the towbar structure.

1) I think I see only one recovery point, so no bridle rigging possible.

2) From the images I suspect the design/mounting of the recovery point is fine "for in line" recovery, but it could be troublesome when forces are exerted at an angle.

3) The light plug seems a bit exposed.

This is just my unqualified opinion.

If I use a bridal the attachment wont be inline is that a problem ? Or is it fine if the pull direction is inline.

Unfortunatly yes its only 2 bolts, I looked at the posts arround the additional bolts.

Quite a few cars seem to have only 2 bolts ?

Is the kracking a widespread problem or only in a few isolated cases or are most towbars fitted with yhe aditional bolts

Many of the cracks areound towbars on other cars seems to be related to stainlesa steel towbars

The cracking is widespread on towbars with 2 bolts a side only AND used towing heavy loads over rough terrain. If you use it to tow the Venter or even a normal caravan to the coast on tar roads and back once a year it will probably never give problems, but if you push it to its limits towing an Xplorer in Mabuasehube sand.... well you might end up like me  . This is definately not only on stainless bars either I can talk out of first hand experience.

Please listen carefully to CATS' warnings above about towbars with too few bolts. On our DiD the BTM towbar also cracked the body shell around the mounting points and that was only from towing a little 7 foot Venter trailer and later a Conqueror Conquest trailer (never in very difficult conditions either).

Does any one know where I can find a tow bar that make provision for the additional mounting bolts ?
