Richtersveld Wilderness Camp

Fri Nov 20, 2015 11:33 am

Spend the last week at this camp looking to catch some yellowfish on fly.Had a 7 hrs drive from from Dwarskersbos without any problems part that it felt like I was driving uphill.Turned left at the Vioolsdrif borderpost for a 21 km drive on a gravel road.
The road is in good cond with only about 2 km badly corrugated.
The campsite is grassy and well shaded but with a weird lay out.Only a few has river frontage with the others at the back meaning that people will have to walk through you camp to get to the front.Ablutions were clean and not entirely closed that means the wind blows up your back if you don't use the middle shower.
Each campsite has a power point, water, table and zink enclosed with thatching.Campsite no 1 is the best protected against the wind that seams to constantly blow here.
Driving back towards Vioolsdrif for 8 km you get oewerbos on your left next to the river. They do canoe trips and have a fully stocked bar and kitchen that is open to the public. They also have a big playground we took the girls and their wood oven pizzas at a very reasonable rate is a must !
Right in front of the campsite is a shallow sandbank where we spend many hours fishing with the girls swimming and playing on the sand. They also have canoes for the use of the campers.
We had a blast and will def be back next year for a month stay with the caravan.Pajero only managed 6 km/l after getting a nasty headwind coming back but the old girl never missed a beat.

Wow that looks awesome. Where in the park is that, east or west side?

Super Jealous!

Looks fabulous. Now that is what a Pajero is built for.

It is 2 km from the start of the Nabapeep Nature Reserve on the south east side of the Richtersveld Park. The gravel road in front of the camp leads towards Eksteenfontein through this reserve

Thanks for sharing this trip report - it is on our list of "To Go To" destinations. We have done the river canoe trip 4 times from Vioolsdrift/Noordoewer to Aussenkeur, and loved the scenery enough for us to always want to go back. Hooking some of those "bars of gold" is of course another extremely good reason to go!
