NJ's Gen 2 Journey with loads of blood, sweat and tears.

Tue Jul 29, 2014 7:03 pm

This is my thread of all my trials and tribulations of my GEN 2 Pajero. Not a show piece, but my pride and joy and hopefully a reliable companion on many a trip and the few or many years ahead.

I did introduce myself here https://www.pajeroclub.co.za/forum/view ... 002#p37002 and would like to continue in this thread. I am new to uploading pictures and not sure if there is a limit to the amount? So here is a pic of the Pajero under the carport looking very sad with the bonnet open. Wondering it's future...

For purposes of completeness, and because this thread was started a few weeks after the overheating incident, I will just fill in a little of the vehicle history with me. Prior to the vehicle in my ownership I do know that it did many a trip without issues.
When transferring the vehicle into my name I had the vehicle serviced and issues sorted for roadworthiness. One inner CV boot was replaced, fan belts and oil and fuel filters replaced as well as the odd electrical issue sorted on the tow hitch and stop lights. Wish I new then about the cooling issues cause I would have had the system flushed and checked.
So about 3000k later, traveling on the freeway, the vehicle lost power and smoke bellowed out the exhaust.
towed the vehicle home and assessed the cause/damage. found the radiator header leaking. After a few checks the cylinder head was removed to replace the head gasket. Sent the head into cylinder head technicians for skimming and crack testing. The head was found to be cracked on cylinders 2 + 3 between the exhaust valve and water cannels.
Will pick up the journey from here ....

This morning I opened the bonnet and took a pic of where we stand at the moment. As can be seen the head has been removed. The only last two little jobs to be done is removing the injector pump and the starter motor. Most of the bolts around the bell housing and engine mountings have been removed or loosened. So we are ready for the big heave on the weekend.

Here is a Pic of the cause of the rebuild. One can see how the radiator header tank is coming adrift of the radiator core.

As discussed in the welcome thread here is a Pic of the two radiators showing the mounting lug differences. Once I have removed the motor it will be easier to relocate the mounting points on the vehicle. I will still try and find the correct radiator but I am not paying R8k when the one I bought is R1.5k.

I have not checked or measured the tank capacities of the two radiators which I will do, but by the looks of it, the new Colt radiator is slightly bigger. I am still concerned over this issue and have not made up my mind on which way I will go. Reason the new radiator has not been unpacked from the box.

Silverton Radiators will build you a 3 core radiator with brass header and lower tanks AND which will fit directly in the existing brackets for considerably less than R8k.

That way you get:
1. Less likelihood of plastic tank cracking (catastrophic failure).
2. Better chance of repair (solder) in the back of beyond.
3. 3 core cooling as opposed to 2 core cooling = increased cooling capacity.
4. Increased coolant capacity.
5. No need to modify brackets - fits per OEM.
6. No need for custom hoses - can use OEM.

That's great news Andrew. Which Silverton Radiators branch do I go to? The colt radiator I got was from Silverton. The told me that they could not help me. The branches I tried were Edenvale and Knights.
I would definitely go that route if the pricing is not too exorbitant. Makes a lot of sense. Thank you for the heads up.

Once again thank you Andrew.

I did some phoning around both Universal Coolers and Silverton head office. Got some very helpful advice from Silverton HO who put me on to the Jeppie branch with what I should request.
Clive helped me and advised with a budget quote of +- R6.5K for a copper core brass tanked radiator. Whilst a bit steep and eating into the budget, I am thinking of all the less work and the added advantage of a greater volume.

So tomorrow I am off to Silverton Radiators, Jeppie, to deliver the old radiator so that they can get cracking on that. Then the other specialists to arrange for the injector pump service, the turbo charger check and service and the air-con compressor refurbished.
