If metalling knock... Most probably the bash plates. I've gone through 2 sets of aftermarket plates - heavier and lighter ones. They are still stiffer than the suspension and you end up with bolts stripping and causing flex. I could usually diagnose this easily if you drive up a curb / rock - anything that makes the suspension flex a lot.

The other knock was a soft thud under the feet - turns out at a stage I dented my fuel tank, and while it seemed very superficial, the plates inside the tank which reduce fuel swish (or whatever) broke and I had to have the tank repaired by a proper welder.

Since then I only get thuds when the take is above 3/4 full - and stopping suddenly.

What is a safe distance to stand off when welding a fuel tank?

I think my knocks, klaps is linked to the bashplate as mentioned earlier by Tuinvurk. Just too lazy to get under there and loosen everything up and see if it makes a difference. Also scared it might not be that and it needs something costly repaired like a steering rack etc. So ignoring it for now.

Must say other than the knock sound the car is really enjoyable to drive lately and just seems smoother or something. Maybe it loosened up a bit now that it is over 200000kms. 8-)

Ps speaking of disel tank, I also have a leak on my auxilary tank weld where it drips out when full. Need to get that resolved on day as well.

Ok. Got off my lazy bum and loosened all the bashplate bolts. Drove the whole day and not a squeek. Seems my money spent on bushes was not really needed to sort out the noise >:-I but at least that has now been done.

Washed the beast as well today and considered to change its name from Casper to BlackPearl, being pearl white with the black rims :-)

It will be sacrilege to change the car’s name now

I like your black rims, I just think it’s bad luck to change a car’s name like with a boat

Hehe, not sure. The fix was arranged by a panelbeater I've known for some time and trust - he removed the tank and sent it to a welder he uses. This was after mitspro tried to fix it (similar approach) without success.

Hi CATS,

For your knocking sound I was going to suggest you try the rear axle shaft nut fix.

I also drive an NS (2008) and over the last year it’s developed a clunk sound on pull away (it’s not diesel in the tank) especially after coasting down a long hill under engine compression. It used to do it now and then but latetly was happening 2/3 times per drive.

I was dreading it might be the rear diff or a suspension part (and recently replaced my control arms bushes), but on the Aussie forum in particular it was suggested that one checks the large nut under the wheel dust cover for tightness.

Anyway, long story short, checked this on Friday and my drivers side nut wasn’t 100% torqued...and the noise seems to have disappeared :)

Let’s hope it stays away!

Would you mind sharing a picture of where this nut is located?

Hi Kurt - I’ll start a new thread and explain it in a bit more detail as it may be useful to others.
