Differentiating and Identifying the relevant Pajero Models

Thu May 02, 2013 12:45 pm

Following on from a discussion elsewhere on the forum I decided to start this thread. It is a Work in Progress so I will update as I get more info/time.

The idea is that this will give a summary of every specific model year(MY) as they came out in South Africa with specific emphasis on the items that distinguished it from the year before/after.

This is only for the 'Standard' Pajero and I would encourage knowledgeable people on the iO, Pajero Sport etc to do a similar thread on them.

I have filled in the parts that I know a little bit of. Please comment on this thread if I get it wrong or if you want to add anything and I will copy it into the original post or edit as we go along.

Lets start:

Generation 1
refer here for a wonderful write up
Pajero Generation 1 - Where it all started

Generation 2

This can almost be broken down in two sections(Gen2 and Gen 2.5) with the earlier models having a slightly revised body from the later ones. The later ones were also called Blister Fender in South Africa due to the enlarged fender arches.

19xx???? - 1999? there was some sold in 2000 as well but even though called 2000 models they are the same as the MY1999

Model year 2010 was a change over year again where the 4m41 Diesel engine was given a power boost from 120kw to 140Kw by some changes on the ECU and bigger turbo(Check correctness of this!!). It also initially came out standard with the uprated entertaimnent system with touchscreen display and is usually the first tell tale sign that a particular 2010 model is the uprated engine one.

Hi CATS,

My 2002 LWB Auto is 5-speed. I didn't realise there were any 4-speed Auto Gen3?

Andrew Thanks. I have a manual so was not sure on the auto. This is exactly the kind of feedback I am looking for. Some real life owners experience.

Anyone else to confirm the older models 2000- to also be 5 speed?

Can someone that know the SWB also check me up as I go along as I have not always followed them as closely.

By the way, I forgot to mention that I will add photos as I go along. So if anyone have good examples of standard vehicles for any specific year please post them on here.

I assume that sunroof was an optional extra?

Thanks for the link.
NB not all the data is correct - eg shows for 2004 MITSUBISHI PAJERO 3.2 DI-D GLS LWB AT:
Altimeter: No
Compass: No
Wading depth: 600mm (I think owner's booklet says 700)
Service interval: 10000 (is that correct? earlier 4M41 was 7500km)
Wheel size: 17" (I thought that change was later?)

But still a useful site.

When I bought my 2004 in June that year I was told that it was one of the first batch imported that had:
1. Round fog lights
2. Chrome grill badge with restyles surround
3. Compass background colour now blue
4. New design 16" wheel rims
5. And very important was the switch from rear diff lock to electronic traction control.

And also the body colour coded rear numberplate surround made it very distinguishable from behind. Previously it was always black.

Bigwill

I was always unsure of this switchover in SA. Was it then in 2004 and not in 2003 as per my summary as it stands now? I always thought so but doing a search on autotrader for 2003 Pajero gives me a number of ones with round foglights? Are they then actually MY2004 model spec already sold in late 2003?

Thanks for the difflock/tc part, I forgot about that as well as the colour coded numberplate surround on the NM to NP in Australia Pajero speak.
