Intermittent blinking light on 4x4 dash

Sun Mar 11, 2018 9:40 am

Really enjoying my 2003 Pajero swb 3200 did. Vehicle has 310,000 kms on the clock. Just changed all gearbox, diff and transfer case oils. Whilst driving, orange light starts blinking on the dash. Switch car off and green lights go back to normal. Took the car to gearbox specialist who advised the problem may be a selenoid switch (there are 6 of them @ R1500 each!) on top of the casing. Was advised to drive the car until the light blinks continuously. Also noticed at times a whirling sound when the car comes to a stop, with a slight "clunking" sound. Transmission in manual. Any comments or suggestions from the forum?

Those little switches just need cleaning. I had this on my previous pajero. Unplug each, clean, spray with switch cleaner...will probably solve it. The whirring noise is probably lazy solenoid engagement...just needs to be used a lot more on gravel roads...I.e. maybe take it on gravel and engage and disengage a number of times...hope my 2c helps.

Hi Ray,

I had the same problem and posted this response under another topic many moons ago:

It's an indication that there's something wrong with the 4x4 system. Mine did the same.
While is was OK to drive it like that in 2H the real problem revealed itself when I tried to shift back from 4H to 2H. The green lights would be flashing as if it's trying to get into 2H mode but all of a sudden the centre orange light will come on and this was followed by a grinding noise as if the gears were not properly engaged.

Had it checked out and after cleaning the shifter and checking the sensors and vacuum hose connections it turned out to be the actuator that needed replacement. While this was quite a pricey item to replace it could have been something as simple as a vacuum hose that came of.

While your problem could be something different I would have it checked out.

If you're in Johannesburg speak to Louis at CNET (Bramfisher Drive Randburg, Tel zero 11 787 771 seven).
I had very good service from them.

The contact name and telephone details might have changed, but CNET is definitely still there.

Hope you get it sorted.

Hi Goldmember. How does one get to these switches? I believe the box needs to be dropped to get to them?

I have exactly the same problem and was informed the Gearbox needed to be dropped in order to get to those vacuum solenoid switches so also waiting for an answer to the question as to whether the Gearbox needs to be dropped to access these switches......

Hi Ray

Hahaha had precisely the same problems with my 2000 3.5l here in New Zealand. No one knew what the problems were.

The blinking orange light I sorted by topping up my transfer box. Levels were a little bit low.

The sound you are hearing when you come to a stop is your 4x4 wanting to engage. When you engage it it will stop. My problem was that my left rear caliper was not releasing the breaks so the truck thinks it is in a tough mud or sand and then it wants to engage 4x4, terrible sound I know.
The cars are to clever now a days. I bled the break lines and the engaging 4x4 has stopped. Seems to happen when the truck feels resistance when moving. Could even be bearings too.

Try that it worked for me.

Many thanks PajeroNZ. I recently changed all diff, gearbox and transfer case oils, but it made no difference to the orange blinking light. When engaging the 4x4, the orange light no longer blinks nor is the whirling sound heard.

...As far as I know cleaning those switches/plugs is not a major operation...

If the centre light starts blinking after about 20k driving its normally a failed vac servo
Easiest to replace as a pair . They are located on the drivers side inner mud guard down below and behind the back of the headlights.

If its not as above the next cause is a stuck servo actuator on the front axle just push back the boot and help it. Then lube and engage 4wd at least monthly.

Seldom is it a sensor failure but MMD love replacing them😉

A mate's Gen 3 had same symptom when the little electric motor on the vacuum pump failed.
