Bying a gen 3 3.2 swb auto

Sun Jun 18, 2017 7:30 am

What should I be looking for when bying/test driving a 3.2 did gen 3 automatic.
Any obvious problems/ tests I should do?

In my experience nothing more than checking the obvious like a consistent service history and I believe a well looked after interior likely reflects a general respect and care for the overall vehicle.

If the vehicle is approaching / over 200k you may want to check or change the top chain guide as in very rare cases the plastic can break off and could wreck the engine.

Also search this forum, there are heaps of more informed and thorough responses that will help you.

Good luck.

Ps. For peace of mind you could also run a pressure test on the motor to check for any issues

Thanks for responding. Did not know about the chain and compression. I tested one last weekend km 198000km but the auto gearbox is jurking when changing gears. Km could be fake but service history is available according to dealer.

The gen 3 autobox is a beaut and shouldn't be jerking. Failure of these transmissions is very rare. They do however need to be maintained with the correct dealer branded fluids otherwise they can behave erratically like you describe.

Heads up. At low speed the gearbox can select 1st gear rather than second (it's clever and will prioritize the optimal gear selection) and this can create a slight jerky movement, but once going the box should be silky smooth.

Don't rush it. You'll find a gem if you're patient.

What spec and budget are you aiming for?

Cool, I also love them. I sold my 2004 3.2 swb with 180k on the clock for R130k about 2 years ago so I imagine you can find a 2004 - 2007 with similar mileage in that price range.

They're great around town and even better on the open / off road.

Don't know where you're based but they are not as common in the Cape so I had to look hard - they seem more common in Joburg.

I'm loving my Gen 4 lwb, but it's lot as much fun or as quick / peppy as my gen 3!

Good luck with the search.

There are 2 or 3 SWB's available on Facebook groups.

One other thing that I would suggest you do:
Remove the 2 cover plates below the engine and gearbox and check for fluids that have accumulated on these.

It takes 10 minutes to remove and replace these and it's well worth the time.

I was recently informed that I may need to start shopping for a Diesel pump as my pump "has had a slow leak for a long time"....
