Pajero Lock Up Kit - Gauging Interest
Hi

I have DIY'd a Lock Up Torque Converter switch for my pajero gen3 3.2 Di-D and it works beautifully so far. After a bit more testing I'd maybe like to make a few and sell them here if there is enough interest.

It still changes up and down as normal when in drive. The changes are still smooth and not jerky.

Using tiptronic to change gears is like driving a manual. It changes smooth as before but the revs behaves like a manual.

The switch can be switched on and off at will. If the switch is off the car is standard and nothing changes.

The switch basically locks the engine to transmission like a manual gearbox. ie if left locked the car will stall when coming to a halt.

The advantages are

- lower ATF temp
- saving on fuel economy
- less hunting
- can push start the auto
- more engine braking

I can provide easy install instructions and the install will only require one earth connection and one wire cut with new connections.

Who would be interested?

I would depending on price.

Q: how will you push-start it ?

ignition on, neutral

push the car, drop to "D" and quickly to tiptronic first/second and hit the switch.

I wouldn't like to do it as it places some stress on the Lock Up clucth but in an emergency it's better than being stranded.

Price will be dependant on the interest. But it would probably be less than half the price of the ebay ones.

I will only make them and put them on sale after I have done some extended testing on mine to make sure all is OK but it would still be a buy-and-install-at-own-risk deal.

If anybody has questions or wants some videos of certain behaviour within reason please ask away.

I can't find any on ebay at the moment but there is an Australian company selling them for just over AU$300.

I think that's a bit pricey even considering the research they did and the guarantee they offer if they install it.

If demand is enough I'll probably sell them for under R1000.

It's a simple solution but takes some effort and time to make them properly. I have to factor in the cost and transport of buying the components, labour & shipping.

Marius,

I'm still fascinated by this concept, so please excuse me if I keep on asking silly questions :)

Do you basically start the car and pull of in "normal mode" and then as soon as you are moving along you activate the lock-up and keep it that way intill just before you come to a stop again?

You say it feels normal/smooth? Even on "kickdown"?

I would like to be able to lockup the clutch on very steep drops where 1st 4LLc is enough.

100% correct. At the touch of the switch ALL slip in the torque converter is eliminated. Even with it locked the gear changes are still smooth (downshifts as well)

But, as mentioned I don't like to leave it in drive as the box changes to the next gear too soon and because of the lack of TC slip the rpm's are now below boost level so in town I would use tiptronic and on the open road I would drive in "D" or tiptronic depending on the conditions. With the petrol (I assume the kit will work on the gen4 box as well) it won't be so much of an issue as it pulls linear from low revs anyway and if you give more throttle it will drop a cog or two and pull of, even if the TC is locked.

It definitely helps in low range. I reverse out of my driveway that has a fair slope and I usually have to feather the brakes if reversing in low range. Now I start of in reverse and just get the car moving, flick the switch and it idles slowly down while I steer and reverse out the gate without the touch of the throttle or brakes.

I'll try and get a few videos in the next few weeks to show the behaviour.

Sounds brilliant Marius! Is there a downside that you or anyone else is aware of? Dependant on price, I would definitely be interested but would need to know that it works on the new spec Gen 4's.

Afaik it will work on the gen4 but i dont know if the wire to splice is the same. And also, the valve body on the gen4 is different which will prohibit lock up in first and reverse unless you upgrade to a nomad valve body from wholesale automatics in Australia.

Hi Marius

I run a business that makes wiring harnesses for GMSA and VWSA. Many of the Isuzu terminals and connectors are similar to the one's used on my Paj. If you need jumper lead sets made I can make to your spec and send you a sample to try. If you are in Port Elizabeth any time you are welcome to come around to the plant. You help so many of us that it would only be a pleasure to help you.

Best regards

Nick
