4x4 Driving advice needed

Thu Nov 08, 2018 11:34 am

Good day guy's.

I have a 2008 3.8 V6 GlS, planned a trip in December to Clarens and Lesotho and intend doing some off road while there, my neighbour informed when using 4x4 I have to disengaged the ASC.

Is he correct or what do you recommend.

Furthermore I planned to service the vehicle(oil, oil filter ,rear axle, transfer case and auto box) but the dealer informed me the fuel filter is in the tank) vehicle's consumption is very high, and idling is very erratic, replaced the air filter just recently a few weeks ago.

Any pointers or advice will be appreciated.

Greetings

Incorrect information has been provided.

On the Superselect one has 4 settings to choose from:

1. 2H
2. 4H
3. 4HLc
4. 4LLc

Positions 1 and 2 will engage ASC if wheel slip is detected, by cutting engine power. Here you can press the “ASC off” button to help you keep the engine power from cutting, but it not safe to do so unless you are prepared to control the potential high speed slide yourself.

Positions 3 and 4 when engaged will automatically switch off the ASC.

So if you are on the rough stuff, and you have selected the appropriate setting, there is no need to manually disengage the ASC.

Position 2 is open centre diff (70/30 front to back torque), position 3 is locked centre diff (50/50) so when you are on the rough stuff (i.e. worse than a gravel road) then you must select 3 or 4 (4 = low range).

Do not select 3 or 4 when on solid ground like tar or cement roads, you will create drivetrain windup and potential damage.

2H or 4H can be used on tar, no problem. Remember to engage N when moving to 3 or 4.

The fuel filter is part of the fuel pump I am led to believe, which is in the tank I think.
