I have retired a year or so ago and bought a 2015 LWB 3.2 Exceed Demo (had 14000 kms on the clock) for all the trips we were hoping would follow in our retirement. The mileage is accumulating quite fast though (when you have fun it seems) and already stands at 72400 now making me wonder how many more years I should be able to enjoy trouble free travelings in this fantastic vehicle? Seems like I should budget for approximately 20000 kms per annum. When at home we try to use our other vehicle most of the time.

Comments on how to preserve it as best as possible would be appreciated. I have used 10 ppm diesel since its introduction (sometimes unfortunately not available when you are not close to a Sasol filling station or when travelling outside of Gauteng) and obviously religiously serviced every 10000 kms at the closest dealership.

There isn't much you can do at this stage. I'd say the first 200k km on a Pajero is just plain sailing. From 200k km you can start thinking about a gearbox flush. Preventative maintenance should also be considered from about 250k to the 300k mark. I'm thinking about coolant hoses and water pump and suspension bushes and such.

For the moment, try to always buy clean diesel, do the usual turbo nanny stuff. Don't rev too soon after starting, allow enough time for proper lubrication of the turbo after starting and allow it to spin down and cool off after driving.

Most Pajero dealers use 15W40 Castrol GTX. There are a few knowledgeable guys that look down on that oil. Chat to your service manager and see if he will allow you to supply your own oil - Caltex DELO.

For the rest, enjoy one of the most reliable 4x4 SUVs on the road.

In all the years i have been doing the pajero dash brackets I have not seen one pajero that has given any major hassles.one vehilce was over 400k on untouched and 3 over 300k on.
The only time they give issues is if you break something or if the dealer you use does not do the services as per book.Like one case i know that they did not do the gearbox oil and the driver started noticing small niggles on the box.Once oil was replaced all was good..SO just make sure that they do what the book says on the time,no questions

The 140kw motor was released in June 2010, so yes he has the meneer engine in there... you’ve been a GM man for too long now Roelf, you’re out of touch

That didn't even hurt. I'm still a Pajero man, who prefers driving a Chev.

Back to the topic of longevity and VGTurbos in particular. How does one care for this beast in the long run, with specific reference to carbon build-up?

On the issue of the VV turbo I would say just give it a good long run every now and again and that should burn off the carbon?

1) A good long run: yes, I agree.
2) A bit of "drive it like you stole it" to give those little veins some exercise.
3) Internet research convinced me to believe that oil vapour introduced into the inlet or combustion chamber of the engine goes a long way towards causing carbon build-up. Basically, if you need to top-up oil between services, then you are likely getting carbon build-up somewhere.
4) Adding low ash 2SO (Jaco FC spec) to the diesel helps to burn off carbon deposits, even in the turbo.

Hi guys.

Been a busy last few days so only catching up now.

I am in the same situation as Louis. 2015 model now just touching 50 000 km.
Good to hear the confidence. Especially from the Chev man!
