Knocking sound

Thu Aug 22, 2019 9:52 am

Good day.
I’m a new member and new Pajero driver.

I have a question quickly please.
I live and work in Dameraland, Namibia and travel a huge amount on these gravel roads and on time off I pack ‘Gertrude’, kids and wife and go bush camping.

When driving on either the standard gravel roads or on the more ‘off the beaten’ track roads, every now and then I hear a knocking sound which by my best guess is coming from the suspension. This occurs at various speeds from about 80km on the standard gravel to a low range crawl at 20. Not all the time either.

I was wondering if could be an indicator that my suspension is reaching the end of its life time?

Oh, and one more question...

Which is the better suspension, with out creating a huge stir, for heavily corrugated gravel roads? If anyone of you have travelled on northern namibia’s “D” roads will know what I’m talking about.

Thanks in advance and have a good excursion!

Check your sway bar links. They look like this:

Hey Guys.

I’ve check both the sway bar links and the control arm bushes. Just from scanning it as much as one can laying in the sand they still look good. No movement and not perished. Don’t know if there is another gremlin inside somewhere...

You need to take a crowbar to the bushes to see if there is movement. Also check if the bush is nice and centre. Those bushes often deserve replacing before 200k km, but we normally don't worry until they start knocking.
Mitsu will want to replace the complete control arm, but there are shops that specialise in just pressing in new bushes.
Remember the shock absorbers (or their mounting bushes) can also result in knocking noises.
Silly stuff like poorly tightened bash plates or bull bars also make similar noises.

Had a knocking sound too - was only when I was in 4H or low range.

Turns out it was as simple as an inner CV joint when front wheels were engaged. May seem obvious, but worth a look

Hi, I had the same problem with knocking sound which seemed to come from the suspension. It turned out to be a left behind wheel bearing that was making this sound as you through a little dip every time. Bearing had huge play and that created the funny knocking sound. New bearing, problem solved, it is worth checking out.
