MASS AirFLOW Sensor issues
Hi Guys,

I had a chat with Blister at the last G2G regarding the MAF sensor:
The gist of the conversation ran as follow:
Mcnoogle wrote:...basically his mechanic did a test, replacing Blisters MAF sensor with the sensor from his own colt bakkie, and put the one he removed in his own bakkie, result - Blisters Pajero was all of a sudden, a lot more powerful, while the bakkie decreased in power, and increased in fuel consumption.
Yet, according to the Pajeros computer, there were no warning lights or anything to suggest that the MAF sensor isn't working properly.
Blister wrote:Sorry coming so late into the thread but yes I am convinced that the mechanic is correct that something is the matter with it which contributes to me belonging to the infamous "20l/100km club" besides wasting power :x :x :x
Now I'm also a member of the "20l/100km club" and am also of the impression that this could be that my MAF sensor is faulty.
I spoke to my mackie yesterday, and he said a diagnostic will show if the MAF is faulty.
But how effective is that, - Blister, surely your mackie would have done a diagnostics check before swapping it with his,
did he swap them because the diagnostic test did not pick anything up?
Also from what he said, one cannot further calibrate the MAF sensor unless you have a chip, and that one needs to be careful about swapping MAF sensors, as you could melt your engine.

Colin, your explanations were very insightful as to how it works, but surely if loss of power/increase if fuel consumption would point to a dirty if not faulty sensor, and surely a diagnostic would pick this up.

Blister just needs to confirm if a diagnostic was done, and what the result was.

What we need to know is, has anyone else been through this process, regarding a 'underperforming' MAF sensor.
How does one go about cleaning / reconditioning it, or do you just replace it outright.
What has fixed this problem, i.e. what is the best and most cost effective solution?

Hi Ned

Waiting for Mech to confirm whether or not diagnostic test confirmed that the MAF was indicated but he confirmed the poor performance of my MAF sensor on his Colt nad my experience with his was the opposite

Re: MASS AirFLOW Sensor issues
As far as my knowledge goes one can not clean or recalibrate these sensors and the only options are to replace with new or good secondhand sensor. Fitting a piggyback chip would enable you to adjust the fueling for the faulty sensor but I would be sceptical about this move as a faulty sensor does not always give the same fault reading, it would probably be erratic in its readings.
In my book the positive response when the sensor was changed is enough justification to change it unless you want to spend more money on tests to confirm what you already know.

Re: MASS AirFLOW Sensor issues
Hi Henk,

Thanks,

I think a new sensor is probably the best Idea, just waiting to see what the outcome is from Aslam, as, as I mentioned,
I'm also getting 20l/100km, but I don't know if my sensor is faulty, so if Aslams mechanic comes back with a fault reading from the diagnostics test, then I'll rush of and get mine tested.
I actually hope this is what the problem is, as R800-1000 for a new sensor (hope it will cost that little) will be a huge saving against my high petrol cost.
The extra power will at this point be secondary (a bonus) to my primary goal of increasing fuel economy.

Hi Ned

In the mean time we may want to investigate these guys as I have had work done by them on both my truck and SWAMBO's Golf 4. Very professional and price competitive

I get to them b4 you I'll post the outcome and I trust likewise you'll do the same

Re: MASS AirFLOW Sensor issues
Just got a quote from the Stealers:

R3, 450.00 (excl VAT) :o :o :o

would this be the kind of think I could buy from Autozone or Parts Centre etc, or is it the type of thing where you definately should be buying from the dealers?

Re: MASS AirFLOW Sensor issues
Just spoke to my contact at Mitsubushi;
He says that they can only test input and output voltage to have an indication but cannot get a true reflection of the state as one needs to get reading under various load conditions

He suggested that one should source people that does diagnostics on ECU's. What you thinks

R3500 that's ouch!! :o I doubt if you'l be able to get it from Autozone or Midas as it forms part of the air intake box. Maybe Diesel Electric ...

Hi Aslam,

I just phoned them,(KC Auto - 021 six eight three 121 four) Applemist Road, Ottery.
they need the bosch part number, I got a part number from Mitsu LMB183609 (which obviously isn't it.)
They say they can check on the part on the vehicle(about half an hour to check for the part number) Unfortunately, I wont be able to go through this year, I will see if I can check for the part number myself.

Try them

Diesel-Electric (Cape)

Telephone: (021) 911 0131
Email: tony@decape.co.za

27 Jones St
Parow
Cape Town

You will have to get the number on the sensor starting with 0282 ... if it is a Bosch.
