Is this the Inter-cooler?
Hi, well as said previously my knowledge about mechanics is dangerous.

I saw that the bottom plate on the Pajero's (sump gaurd - plastic one at the botton) was broken at the back where it should be fixed to the body and is flapping loose so decided to take it off to see if i can sort of fix it.

I noticed what i think is the Inter cooler and has a huge dent in it. :o

What is the short and long term dangers with this bump and how critical is this part to the health of the engine?

Re: Is this the Inter-cooler?
Yes

That is the intercooler. It will still work in its current state, but not as good as originally intended. Hopefully it does not have a crack in it from the bump, as that will even further reduce its efficiency. Leaving it in its current state does not constitute any danger, but will lead to slightly less power.

The intercooler is used to cool down air that is sucked in by the turbo to increase the oxygen due to the increased density of the air. This will give better burning of the diesel and in turn increase power from the engine. Yhe unit on the Pajero is an extremely well engineered design leading to a very small unit compared to its efficiency. Putting in an aftermarket one is not advisable as they cannot reach the same efficiencies as easily.

By the way, a replacement unit from Mitsu is round about R5000!!

My advice is to start saving for a new one, but in the mean time to fit a proper bashplate from www.Lynx4x4.co.za to protect this one and the new one when it eventually arrive. Not cheap but definately worth doing.

Hi, thanks for the info. i haven't notice any real change in power loss. still as grumpy as when i got him 3 weeks back. but i dont like things like that to linger to long so i will definitely invest in a replacement inter-cooler in the next few months. will put the Computer cluster replacement on hold for now.

A good bash plate and belly protection is absolutely on the cards, the current stock bash plate already got a a few to many bumps and knocks.
I was looking at the Front-runner bash plates so thanks for the link, i will definitely look to lynx4x4 for the protection i need.

Spend the whole afternoon creating a temporary fix for the plastic belly plate that is broken and flapping in the wind. Got hold of an old Geyser housing, and created my own belly plate from it. its not thick metal but the 1.5mm plate should keep small stones and sticks at bay until i can fit proper protection.

not to bad for a pen pusher :geek: if i may say so myself :D

Re: Is this the Inter-cooler?
A good radiator centre should be able to rectify that without majo problem and at a fraction of replacement cost. As for the bashplate....all has been said

Re: Is this the Inter-cooler?
Gave lynx4x4 a call now, and will be fitting a new bash plate @ the end of the month :D
