Ok, finally got it sorted. Bought a starter for R1500, and got it fitted. I'll take the original one in to get repaired them keep it as a spare. Mitsubishi charges R5370 +VAT for a starter, plus R300 to fit it. No matter how hard I tried I couldn't find one that expensive anywhere else.
The starter on my 3.2 swb packed up on Sunday, which resulted in this ugly picture...
The car starts at first turn of the key, but I can hear the starter spinning / whining for a few seconds afterwards now - is that normal for a repaired starter?
The car was dropped off at an auto electrician this morning and the starter was up and running again by lunch time. Apparently the brushes were worn - they replaced these and cleaned up a few other things. It cost R1,020 to fix.
