I might be misinformed, but the angle that the diff gears are cut, are designed for forward motion, meaning that they are designed to carry huge loads in that direction. By now reversing, the diff is subjected to forces that are not catered for.

I unfortunately cannot find the thread that explained it with pictures (it was either on the community or LCCSA) but if I find it, I'll post it.

Kai is exactly right...

Reverse recoveries should be avoided if at all possible.
1) additional strain on the mechanicals (this is the primary reason)
2) you have more metal and space between you and whatever might break from the recovered vehicle.
