At serious cost!
Ok, please shoot with some suggestions. Can I get hold of a 6G74 complete engine and at what cost.
I'm at words end and need some outside insight.
We just returned from two weeks in Zimbabwe. Our first long trip with our newly acquired 2000 Gen 3 LWB Pajero 3.5 V6. On the way back (around 155 km from Buluwayo at Gweru) some serious klaka klaka noise and the rest is history, long night towing (after I took off both prop shafts) then tow from Buluwayo to Francistown. The vehicle is now at Naledi Motors in Francistown. Verdict.....snapped conrod bolt......apparently the vehicle now needs a complete engine rebuild.

I was in a similar position earlier this year. I had to decide whether to sell as scrap, get another engine or repair.
I couldn't find a decent engine so that took care of that (also heard some stories about wrong/incompatible engines), and selling as scrap was never really considered as you get nothing for them.
I decided to rebuild and it took nine months, one swap of mechanic (some shouting involved) but it was worth it.
If you can, take your time and have it repaired properly.
Unfortunately I couldn't do any of the work myself (too stoopid) so was at the mercy of the mechanics. In the end I found a brilliant one who works from his house and allowed me to come around any time. He stripped, cleaned and rebuilt the whole thing in about 6 weeks.
I'll be available with more info if you need it, just ask - must go work now and can't read forum during day but will keep an eye on this thread and post again this evening.

what extent is the damage? did the conrod go through the block?
If not then a crank grind with a cylinder bore, hone and set of pistons will sort you out.
I bought a gen2 with a severely overheated engine. Crank journals were lifting and pistons were slapping.
My rebuild cost me less than R20k and that included lots of extras like oil pump, water pump, pipes etc.
I prefer a rebuild as a good rebuild is as good as new. A sub assembly is risky ticket in my books as you don't know the history.

You're making a good call to take your time - haste makes waste!
Maybe you want to enquire about a Jap import as replacement engine?

I replace my engine in July this year, rebuilding would have been R22,000.00 if I did it myself. The standard price for a Jap import engine was about R21,0000.00 at that time, I called about ten places and the prices varied from R19,500.00 to R22,000.00. Then just as I was about to give up on the idea of replacing the engine I found one at Engines&More for R14,000.00 . Not sure why is so much cheaper but the engine is perfect. I have done 7000km with it since replacing and it is running like a dream, also took it for a check over at CRD and they said the engine is close to perfect.

I had a similar kind of situation only my engine was destroyed due to my own stupidity / arrogance.
I got a replacement from Japan auto and after 80k and three years I am still happy and driving problem free. I have gone the jap import route with a few of my cars and for me it is just not worth the time and effort to rebuild a motor and if one has to rely on someone else to rebuild......there are enough horror stories to make my hair stand up
