Below are pics of two 3.2DID filters - on the left a used one and on the right a new one. What are your thoughts on the used one? Is it time to change it now, way passed it's due date or can it still go for a while?

That seems to sum it up.macjohnw wrote:...way passed it's due date...
Especially the third pic looks like it reached it's end.

I agree, that is why I bought the new filter - the guy who did the service previously apparently did not think it was an issue. I would normally change the filters long before it gets to this point.

That freaks me out - they leave vital parts of a service out in order to appear cheap, then they get to overhaul the engine!

The air filter was last replaced during the 135500km service in November 2010, according to the invoice. It is on 157500km at the moment, so in +/- 22,000km the filter is done and needs to be replaced. Does that sound about right?
a filter is a variable. If you drive in extremely filthy areas (JHB smog or lots of dirt) then replace it with every service IMHO or maybe even sooner.
Under normal circumstances I wouldn't stretch the air filter more than 20'000km IMHO
