Pajero valve clearance setting.
Entabeni here with further questions concerning the best procedure for setting 3rd generation 4M41 3.2 DiD valve clearances. I have had conflicting information from the agents. One agent's workshop manager told me that they never take off the valve cover on this motor because it has hydraulic lifters! With the manuals saying that valve clearances must be set to 0.10 mm intake and 0.15 mm exhaust I think it very unlikely that hydraulic lifters are used! The Haynes manual goes to the other extreme and says clearances must be checked every 10,000 km! This just HAS to be excessive.

Then I spoke to another agent's mechanic who said that the clearances MUST be checked, but at much longer intervals, because they might not increase and become noisy but might in fact reduce and lead to burnt valves and seats. He said that the procedure involves two people, one underneath (presumably to rotate the crankshaft) and another on top to ensure the correct camshaft position and to set the clearances. This sounds reasonable, but what am I to believe?

The practical problem is how to rotate the motor while setting the clearances. Using the starter motor with a remote switch sounds a bit too 'hit and miss.' However, the zone in front of the motor in the Pajero 3.2 DiD LWB GLS AUTO is so cluttered that access to the crankshaft pulley bolt looks impossible without some serious dismantling. What, if any, is the best method? Please help!
