Engine Check Light
Hi,

On the way to work this morning, while cruising at say 90km/h up a hill, I wanted to pass a car - put my foot down, and the car started accelerating, but then power dropped and I saw the engine check light was on for a second - so I slacked off. Engien check light stayed off. I tried accelerating again and the same thing happened.

Then say 30 seconds later, I tried again, and it was fine - no loss of power, no engine check light.

For the rest of the drive, I tried accelerating, and everything was fine.

Any ideas? What causes the engine check light to go no?

Only things that are different to normal were:
* Outside temp was quite cold - 6 degrees.
* Was using 50ppm diesel on this tank (normally use 500ppm) - Fuel consumption on the 1st half of this tank has been a bit better than normal).

Not sure if the above makes any difference? I had been driving for about 15mins - water temp was normal.

Oh, vehicle is a 2005 Pajero DiD.

you might have to get it scanned. There should be an error logged in the ecu that will tell you what went wrong.

It may be a huge problem or it may be simple dodgy wiring connection.

It happened again under hard acceleration... will take it to the dealer.

The Pajero was in for a service 2 days ago... maybe a coincidence?

I just checked the air filter, and it is pretty dirty... they didn't seem to check/replace it at the service (2 days ago).. Maybe that is the problem?

Oh dear,

Service immediately followed by a problem... I've heard this song before.

I smell starvation. You put foot and the car wants lots of fuel and air, it doesn't get enough and goes into panic mode.

Hmmm... I think I might replace the air filter and fuel filter anyway. Fuel filter isn't too old, but we did a trip to Kaokoland (might have gotten dirty more quickly.

Had the code scanned at the dealership...

Error Code 49 - Overboost

They say I need to book the car in so that they can do some testing:
* Check actual boost
* Check solenoids in intake
* Check diesel pump - they need to measure a whole lot of voltages on some connector, to check that the pump is okay.

Anyone know if the above can be done somewhere else? At a diesel specialist in the Cape?

Hi to All,

I had the same problem on my 1999 3.5 V6 petrol. I had this intermettent problem, this would happen after about 100k's and sometimes last for a day or two. Took it to a guy in Edenvale who put his computer on and diagnosed the MAF, also diagnosed that the alternator was not charging properly (the charge light would always stay on very faintly). He put in a recon alternator, and I proceeded on a trip to KZN south coast, Transkei/Wild Coast without any problem.

After about 1000k's it happened again in Port Edward. As I was heading to the Wild Coast, I decided to go to the nearest Stealers, Shelley Beach, to ask for assistance from sevice dept, just put the computer on to check the fault codes. Firstly they were not very helpfull, and told me to come back the next week. I told them I can't, as I was on my way to Port St Johns, then they said my vehicle was too old and their computer software wouldn't be able too see any thing. :evil: :cry:

I then decided, S**ff you, went to parts and bought a new MAF (R4100) and I would install it myself. I took the MAF off to look for the part number, and put it back. The Parts guy, very friendly & helpfull, :D had no stock and ordered one from Jhb, this was about 3pm. Next day @ 0900 he phoned me to say it was there. I fetched, and continued my trip to PSJ, I did not install the new MAF as the problem had gone away. I did another 3000k's, coming back to Gauteng thru Lesotho with no problem. I suspect that there is a dry joint or loose connection in the MAF which was "connected" again with the fiddling to find the part number.

When I got home, I phoned the parts guy & and asked him if I could return the Maf, allthough the return policy had a limit of 14 days, & I had it 3 weeks, no problem, I couriered it back to Shelly Beach & my my money was banked within 3 Days! So thumbs up to Shelley parts, & thumbs down to their Service Dept.

Otherwise I am very happy with my Paj, bought it in May 2010, did 2000k till March 2011, then did 4000k in April, got an average fuel consumption on the trip of 9km/l.

Carel - Thanks for the feedback, but the error code indicates that it is an overboost error...

I had a look in my Workshop manual, and the error #49 is listed as: Overboost (wastegate malfunction).

So I assume the wastegate is not opening enough to limit the turbo pressure. I think it is either the wategate that is "sticky", or the actuator isn't working properly. Or the sensor that indicates overboost is faulty.

I'm still busy reading up about this - any comments / help is appreciated :)

I might take the car to a turbo specialist, if I can find on in the Cape...

The idea that the dealership wants to test the fuel pump, etc just sounds wrong?

Well, over the last week, the fault has not occurred again.

So I think it might have just been a sticky waste gate or something? I have tried to get it to happen, do exactly as before, but everything seems fine again.

Any feedback again Greg? I have the same symptom after I have done my valve stem seals.

It is currently at Mitsu to check timing, set the tappets and do a compression test.
