Diesel fuel system cleaner - yay or nay?
As contraversial a subject as the choice between diesel or pertol engines....

The dealers sell an additive that goes into the fuel tank to clean the fuel system.
Apparently the newer motors dont like the sulphur of even the 50ppm variety and need a bottle or two of this magic potion to avoid build up of nasty stuff in the inlet/outlet systems.

The problem is supposed to be even worse if standard diesel is used.

Comments?

I was told by the dealer on my 3.2 Triton I should put the cleaner in every 2500km if I'm running 50ppm and every tank when running 500ppm....at a R100 a bottle it will get very expensive

My dealer had a puzzled look on his face when I asked him about this cleaner. Even more puzzled when I gave him the part number!

Well, I used some at 33 000 km. Now on 38000km Consumption was around 11,8L/100.
(enthusiastic driver)

Then noticed i was hovering around 12.8 and even 13.5 at times. Same driving.
Added another bottle of whatever it is, and voila! 10.8L .....

Is our diesel THAT bad ?

Due to my travels , it's not always possible to get 50ppm, so my sport is normally running the dirtier 500ppm from Piets Pompstasie in Patensie or Paterson

Also, she's not a work and back , hardly getting warm kinda girl. Mostly cruising 140+ all over, including 20-30% gravel at similar speeds. So all parts like turbo run nice and hot.

My understanding has always been that a worked motor is a happy, clean motor, shrugging off deposits etc

But it seems that is not the case here.
Perhaps a unit running less aggressively will have even more of a deposit problem ?

....and I thought the 3.2 was bulletproof? You want to tell me that I must treat it the same as one of these hi-tec diesels from BMW and Porsche?

What has changed since the 3.2 was invented? Isn't it the same engine besides the newer one has CRD?
