Pajero 2600 Cabrio - Germany
Question for the experts on the Pajeros: as we like our current Pajero here very much, I was searching the net last Sunday for Pajeros in Germany and found this one: Pajero 2600 Cabrio....which looked very nice to me. I especially like the "open version"...I know, we have many rainy days, but also some sun ;)

Positive: seems to be in good condition and the price is for Germany very good. The age (1988) has some benefits - as of 25 years we can register cars in Germany as "oldtimer" with significant reduced roadtax and insurance contribution.

Downside: 3 previous owner and high mileage for a rather small petrol engine.

What is the experinece with that type of engine ? I never heard about this engine before (only 2.6 liter)

It's yours to help decide to purchase or leave it  ....would be a nice X-Mas present....
Re: Pajero 2600 Cabrio - Germany
Gerhard Fourie (4ePajero) is our resident Gen 1 specialist, so he would be better qualified to answer, Joerg.

The engine is actually not that small for a four cylinder at 650cc per cylinder. As far as I know it is a very reliable and durable motor that was used in many Mitsubishi products over many years and was also used by Mazda for some of its products. 180000 km does not seem to be that high a mileage. Don't expect excellent fuel consumption, though.

The engine model code is 4G56 (I think) and it is a single overhead cam four cylinder with balancer shaft. The camshaft is chain driven.
Bore is 91.1mm and stroke is 98mm. The compression ratio is a low 8.2:1.

Re: Pajero 2600 Cabrio - Germany
Thanks Gerrit - for the first insights. I'm less concerned on the engine status, my brother in law can do a revision if needed. I was mainly surprised about the model itself. When I searched last year in autotrader here in RSA, I never saw this version... ...because I would have gone for it given the nice weather here.

It's probably going to be rather a summer car then an all year vehicle. Will wait for the recommended experts input ;) ...

PS. thanks for moving - must have picked the wrong subforum.
Re: Pajero 2600 Cabrio - Germany
The Gen 1 Pajeros are quite scarce in South Africa, especially the short wheelbase models. Only a small number of the very last of the Gen 1 long wheel base models was ever imported into South Africa by the agents (Samcor at that time). There are a couple of grey imports in South Africa that have found their way here over the years and I have seen one or two short wheelbase models, but never one with the removable canvas top.

As of the Gen 2 model the Pajeros were imported in large numbers and it became a very popular vehicle, but the Gen 1s remain a bit of a rarity.

Re: Pajero 2600 Cabrio - Germany
You listed two Pajeros.

That first one is a beaut! If you can find a way of getting it registered in South Africa I'll buy it the moment you have the registration sorted out!
Imagine that with a 50mm body lift, 32 Di-D engine and 35" tyres! (That will shut ost T... and J... owners up!).

The second one sounds a bit dodgy - the seller's opinion on TLC usually differs substantially from the buyer's!

The Gen1 is a nice (albeit old) 4x4. IMHO it was way ahead of it's time as far as build quality, engineering and equipment levels go.
Because it was never sold in SA parts can be a problem (locally). Everything can however be imported from the USA or UK.

The 2600 4-banger is a solid old-style engine which is reliable but under-powered and thirsty.
It was used locally in the first Mazda 2600 4x4s, so service parts can be found.

Agree, the open version looks nice...I was intending to go for this type when back in Germany next year. I will not try to import it to RSA...won't work with the LHD vehicles, we tried this already with our BMW 330 D last year...w/o success...

But this engine is in the open version of my posted link. Unfortunately, I would like to get a 3.2 Diesel engine settled in but I would never get the green light from the authorities in Germany to use this modified vehicle in public traffic...so this is a nice watch-out but can't be realized when back home...

To close the loop - would you recommend to see and potentially by this 2600 Cabrio Pajero - the price is around 22.000 ZAR given current exchange rate...?
