Triton 3.2 DID motor for Pajero Gen 3
I've bought my long time dream Gen 3 3.2 DiD and traded my beloved and trustworthy partner for 5 years Colt 2.8 Rodeo. The Pajero, a SWB 2001 model, had 168 000 km on the clock, a service history, although not all from the agents, and is in a fairly good condition for its yearmodel. Long story short, I had it for two months, and two days ago, no 4 piston's conrod went through the engine block whilst driving around 80km/h. Needless to say, no guarantees, everything is on me.

I got to get another engine. Just now I was contacted by my brother saying he can get me a 2007 3.2 DiD Triton motor with less than 50 000km on the clock, also a 4M4 engine for a very good price compared to the prices quoted to me this far. Now there is a lot of voices going up warning me that although both are 3.2 DiD 4M4 motors, there is vast differences in electronics and that it is not cost effective to try and do it. Can you give me advice on this. Is there a lot needed to be done in terms of electronics, fuelpump ect and would you so something like that if you were in my position. (short on cash)
Re: Triton 3.2 DID motor for Pajero Gen 3
I would do the simple fix.
Replace only the block (and possibly the head).
Use the old engine's fuel system, electronics and peripherals.

To convert from the injector pump system to common rail with all the electronics involved, just seems to much of a hassle to me.

Re: Triton 3.2 DID motor for Pajero Gen 3
I would like to know what the difference is between the engins. I see that the power and torque specified for the two engines is different. Is this because of machanics or is it the ECU ?

This knowledge can also help to take a desision on using the Triton engine or using the sub assembly ? There may even be a difference in the head design.

The main difference is the fact that the new engines are common rail injection, whilst the older ones had injection pumps.

The ECUs are obviously different, since Common Rail Injection needs considerably more input from the ECU than the injector pump system.

I recently swapped engines on a 2.5 TD Mazda drifter.

The import engine I got was a from a european front wheel drive automatic vehicle.

I pulled the old engine and had them both side by side and swapped over all the stuff that was different.

In my case it was

- vacuum pump and pipes
- power steering pump
- exhaust downpipe
- intake manifold end piece
- flywheel
- starter
- electrics
- water pipes
- alternator
- engine mountings

luckily the diesel pump was the same.

NB : Remember that the 4M41 pumps are calibrated to individual injectors (the pump compensates on small scale for variables in injectors) so always mate the pump to the injectors otherwise you will have to have the pump recalibrated by a specialist - I don't believe the average diesel specialist have the electronic tools to do this to the pump.

- only read this in the covec pump manual this morning looking for something else

Hi Guys,

thanks for all the replies on this. I've decided to pass on the Triton motor. Simply too much electronic pitfalls. If anyone knows where I can find a 4M41 Pajero motor with a known history for a reasonable price, even if it's just a sub-assembly(head & block), please let me know. Everyone tells me i'm looking for "hoender tande" :(

Try Auto Spares in Benoni. They have but 2007 and 2009 but they got one for me (2003)

What caused the conrod to hit the block, the milaege are still low on the engine.

My bet would be on the timing chain guide. Sometimes you are lucky when they fail and the bits fall into the sump without incident.

Other times the parts go between the chain and the sprockets and then all hell breaks loose!

Maar sou dit nie meer skade aan die head veroorsaak het nie, pistons wat valves slaan ens.
