3.5 v6 Blister Fender - Fuel smell
Hey guys,

Just a quick question. Since I've had my Pajero it's always had a bit of a petrol smell when I start it or at idle (seems I can smell the fumes as I'm not moving). I don't know if it's running rich. I don't really have abnormal fuel consumption or power issues - could be a little lighter on fuel when I read what others get, but I'm at the bottom end of the average range.

Thought I'd ask if anybody knows about this or has experienced the same?

Cheers,
Jurgen

2 things will cause that

either the ecu thinks it's too cold - coolant sensor or intake air temp sensor (inside MAF meter)
OR the MAF meter is giving the wrong reading.

I would start by cleaning the MAF sensor (or have it done) and replacing the 2 coolant temp sensors - see my thread below

Hi Marius,

I cleaned my MAF sensor with electroclean but can still smell fuel. I now want to replace the 2 sensors.
For clarity: As per your diagram on your post is it number 3 & 4 for the 3.5 V6 then?
So no need to replace 1 & 2 then?

Thanks

Fitted both new sensors over the weekend. Since then now more fuel smell :D :D

Will check if comsumption improves a little.

Thanks again

that's awesome. Fuel consumtion should improve.

Plan an oil change soon as overfuelling tends to wash fuel past the rings into the oil diluting it.

Hi Guys,

I have a 3.5 Blister SWB, with exactly the same problem. Since I am a complete numpty with anything mechanical, (I made a complete mess of fitting a new washer on a Y-piece splitter on the washing-machine tap in the kitchen  ) I can't figure out 4ePikanini's digram, so I don't know where these sensors are to clean them. Considering having them replaced as well. Is it a big job, how much did it cost, where did you have it done etc? Is the engine running rich always caused by the MAF sensor, or could the fact that it has had a CRD or SAC chip installed affect it? It tends to idle pretty rough, and when the engine is cold it almost sounds like one of the cylinders are dead, or flooded. Freek Jnr at Mitspro reckons it is definitely a problem with the chip, but I'd like to be sure it's not the MAF sensor. Once it heats up though it is smoother running, still with a very minor miss as it idles. Considering taking it to SAC so that they can have a look at it for me, since I am sure they installed it (I bought the car with the chip already installed), just struggling to get away from work at the moment.

Any help or advice would be extremely welcome!
