I wonder if Van Zyls Pass is negiogable with a Off Road Caravan or Trailer. Does anyone who has been there think it is possible or is the gradients too steep and will the risk be tooooo big :?: :?:

Pawbypaw, 1 of the guys with us did it with a trailer without any issues at allM There are 2 or 3 steep sections, but a trailer is doable, preferably a braked trailer, I will do it with my Bushbaby, it will take a few scrapes on the rear though. Offroad caravan may be a bit more tricky, van Zyls is basically all downhill, so I think it can be done, will get more scrapes. Watch the weight for the rear, will only do with air bags to keep rear of Paj off the rocks as well.

Im somewhat intrigued by Pic no 6, where it looks like you guys are camping in a dry river bed???

If yes, rule no 1 for camping (especially in Nam) is NOT to camp in a dry river bed. It could rain many miles away (you dont even see the clouds) and flash waters could give you a rather rude awakening. Personally, I would camp just off the river bed. M2CW

Still amazing pics:):):)

Hi Kai,

You are 100% correct, the river beds can be dangerous to sleep in, in Namibia based particularly on flash floods which can and does happen and can have severe impact and not give you enough time to get away resulting in lost goods car, etc.

The the one river in particular was a very small river just prior to van Zyls pass with no water or signs of water and dug a hole to see water levels and that was around 1m deep, so we were high on the plateau with no signs of high water along the tree banks, so we saw this as low risk, all other rivers we slept in (there were a few), we parked the vevicles safely higher or at a reduced risk location where we could get to or they would not be affected in the event they were to flood. The one pic of the river with the water was a higher risk location, very wide and very flat, cars were all kept away from river and able to get away if the need be onto rocks, but we were in a risky sleeping position ourselves.... Just looked to lekker to pass up, can't deny it....

Always lekker to read nice reports especially nice pics and there are quite a few on here, which is great - Greg and Kai also had great reports on Kaokoland and saw some different places. I can spend alot of time just picturing being in the bush when can't get there at times.

Namibia is just lekker, such a nice place, especially for bush camping and just stuffing around. Can't wait for next trip :-)

Northern Namibia is on my bucket list, but probably only in 2013 or '14.
After reading your excellent report, it might have to be brought forward!
Thanks
