Re: Emergency - 2002 GDI 3.5 v75w - Overheating
There are members who know Mpumalanga better than I do, so let's hope somebody pitches in.

I would not accept him using the head gaskets again! :o

Hi there,

A few silly questions:

a. Have you replaced the thermostat?

b. Have you replaced the pressure cap??

These two small and innocent looking items can cause big problems. Dumping a thermostat in boiling water is NOT a real and reliable test for its serviceability and as for the test performed by the radiator people on the pressure cap?? I can only say :"ja wel boet it is fine".

If you have not replaced these items, that will be a easy and fairly cheap place to start.

Hi There,
God Bless You guys!
It really feels I am not alone with my Pajero saga!...

Just come back from the garage.
:? New gaskets tightened in front of me!
However, I have lost trust completely!
But PLEASE let me tell you why tomorrow evening.

Haven't changed the thermostat because, as explained before, I drove for 20 km w/o it and still overheating.
Radiator cap looks new and listening to it hear no sign of cracks. Also the engine overheating so fast makes me believe it's not the cap. But will definitely buy them tomorrow, even if the issue will be fixed.

I am really grateful to you all!!
PLEASE DO CONTACT ME when coming to Mozambique. As you know the country is stunning and people beautiful!
Servicing your Pajero here?... Hmmm let's see!

Senache,

Not sure if you have seen this post around overheating, may be something useful there for review:

Cheers and hope it is sorted soon!

Hi Sanache

I think your radiator core is partly blocked NO AMOUNT OF FLUSHING AND NO AMOUNT OF ACID DIPPING will unblock a compacted radiator core the only solution is to remove the top and bottom tanks from the radiator and rod each core

generally four things are needed for cooling
PUMP: squeeze and release the radiator hoses with your hand one can feel the force of the pump
THERMOSTATE: remove
VISCOSE FAN: at operating temp does it move sufficiant air
RADIATOR CORE: NO adaquate test

If the top two are at fault generally the engine will run and the temp will start to rise from start up and keep rising

Bottom two the engine will run at normal temp and after say 20min or encountering a hill the temp will rise. once the temp starts to rise it will not come back to normal

insist on having the radiator rodded

Thanks for your new directions and support Davidvan and Colinken.
Wife forced me to go buy Christmas stuff!... Yeah... Christmas coming... like I don't have enough problems... :-):-(

While out of Maputo I have sent an sms to the mechanic asking him if we winning. He said problem fixed but oil leaking from a cylinders head. So he had to go back and change that gasket and so on. BUT, he said, engine does not overheat anymore!!!

Got back and assisted to gaskets installation and all the engine up to the last head and screws. Tomorrow they will finish at 12.00...

I will get back to you. But honestly, I become very pessimistic already!
But let's see... sometimes good things happens in Christmas Eve!

If the engine will overheat again it should be a radiator problem for sure. In that case I will take on this road! No way to send the car back! I have seen the engine today, the cylinders heads look like new... changed gaskets, heads, water pump and its become one of my most wanted car ever!

See you tomorrow evening.

Re: Emergency - 2002 GDI 3.5 v75w - Overheating
Got the car yesterday (Sat 17.12, 13:30).
Immediately after engine start the gauge jumps to overheat.
After about 5-10 min (or 3-4 km driving) the gauge come down to normal and usually stays there.
Made a 400 km trip today (Maputo-Bileni-Maputo). The gauge stayed below middle 90% of the distance.
Exceptions:
- Jumped to overheat when started
- 2-3 times gauge went above middle but within limits.

THE ENGINE IS NOT ACTUALLY OVERHEAT??

As you know:
- installed new gaskets
- replaced the cylinders heads
- installed new water pump
- flushed the radiator
- replaced the cap
What else can it be?
Will drive to Nelspruit on Tuesday but apparently all garages are closed. Do you know where I can have my cooling system professionally checked?

Re: Emergency - 2002 GDI 3.5 v75w - Overheating
Senache,

If you GDI is similar to my Gen3 3.5 GLS, then you may have the same issue as myself - faulty board behind the instrument cluster. BUT, you need to confirm that your water pipes behind you radiator are not cold as on earlier post which can mislead the diagnosis..

Do you have an external temp monitor available or another gdi Paj to check the gauge, that is how mine was isolated, first with an external temp monitor, isolated the issue and then the board. It is just odd and not normal if the pipes on the radiator do not heat up.

May be a next item to check on your list, in problem diagnosis.

Search for a post by goldmember, he directed me and has some detail there.

Good luck

Hi Senache

Is the ambient temperature lower today than on previous days do you notice that the ambient temperature makes a diffrence to your pajero's temp

Is your pajero auto? you mentioned earlier heat coming from the floor a auto box needs coolant from the radiator. If the radiator is not cooling properly the auto box will run hot this might explain the heat in the floor.

EVERYTHING here points to the radiator core being partly blocked, I still think it needs to be rodded

The cooler ambient temperature in Japan would not have shown this problem up as bad as you have it in hot ambient temprature

These are just my thoughs hope it helps you
