Hi Guys
Any advise on oil change intervals on a 3,5V6 with 249k on the clock? Currently doing oil change every 5000km, can I stretch to 7500 or even 10000kms?
it's a petrol engine. If you use good oil and do more than 50km on a regular basis I would stretch to 15'000km.
If you only do mostly short shopping trips etc then stick to 10'000km

Oil is the life blood of your engine. Manufacturers recommend certain intervals that would see their engine reach a certain lifespan without problem and when that is reached you are expected to provide more revenue through the purchase of a new vehicle or replacement parts.
Oil is more than just lubrication, it acts as a detergent to keep the engine free of sludge and does a lot for heat dissipation from moving parts internally and with all the additives it goes even further than that.
I run my oil for 8 - 10k max and I use what I feel to be the best for a petrol engine, Edge sport 10w 60. It is a full synthetic oil with excellent detergent qualities and lubrication specs and it looks after my oil seals as well. My engine is running noticeably cooler and as a bonus I get half a kilometer extra per liter of fuel. Cost is about R 300/ 5l, while the cost of a Jap runner 3.5 is about R20k. I tend to go for the early oil changes

My 1999 3.5 V6 Pajero also has high mileage (252,000km).
So far I've been using Delo 400 but was wondering if it is still the best oil to use for old vehicles?
It does not really smoke, but I do get an oil burning smell if I idle for some time - what should I make of that?
Also - when I do an oil change I always replace the filter as well. I never use snake oils like engine flush but recently heard of guys doing a flush with some diesel in the oil.
Is this good (diesel or flush) for my high miler?
Thanks
Pierre

Freshman,
Don't put any diesel into your engine oil, never.
If you are faithfully replacing old oil and oil filters with Delo 400 (muntigrade 15W- 40), then you are most probably dealing with a very sludge-free engine.
Are those lifters quiet? If "yes", then relax and continue with your regular Delo 400 services.

I replaced the lifters with the ones from Alert about 10,000km ago and they only make a bit of noise at start-up for about 2 min or so. Else they are much better than they used to beRoelfleRoux wrote: Are those lifters quiet?

I just reminded myself - the gearbox was pulled 2 months ago. Wonder if they had to change the engine oil as part of the process then?
If so, they probably put non-Delo in.
If that is the case I'll change the oil over the weekend.
