Botswana - CKGR, Kubu, Kgalagadi
We're off to CKGR in mid May, and looking for stops on the way there and on the way back. Any advice would be appreciated!

Way there:
> Kubu island - what is better, 1 or 2 nights?
> Route from Kubu to CKGR Sunday Pan via (Matswere gate and Rakops) doable in 1 day?

Afterwards:
> We spend our last nights in Piper Pan... keen to head to Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park after that.
> What is the best route for that? Were thinking of doing via western CKGR gate (Xade), and heading for the A2. Is that the best way?
> Where would the distance be to the closest fuel going that route?

Hi Karl, Kubu is a place to chill. Depends on what time you hope to be there but if you arrive after a long day's driving it will be better to spend 2 nights and enjoy the emptyness of the place. CKGR should be doable in a not to long day. Our aim is always to errect camp by 15hoo in the afternoon thereby have some time to look around as well.

I Can't add value to your other questions

I agree with Chris, if there by 3pm then just 1 night to see the place and get the Kubu sunrise and sunset photos and do a bit of walking around and exploring.

Later may mean 2 nights, but Kubu is not a massive rock and granite island but a great place to visit and experience. I would suggest 1 night if you can be there by 3pm, else 2 nights but that may be a bit long so try and plan to be there by 3pm I would suggest. Watch for thorns on some of the sites, there can be a lot and you will camp on the western side so try and get to the north west side so you see the sunrise which is awesome so plan on an early wakeup here.

Can't comment about the other places, sorry.
Re: Botswana - CKGR, Kubu, Kgalagadi
How many days you in CKGR for before you head south and out towards Kgalagadi? All reports I've been reading indicate that it's helluva boring out that way, but the thought of Kgalagadi would be enough for me to endure it :D

My March trip is suffering a minor setback - my fellow travellers are not able to make our dates and common sense I shouldn't do it totally solo ;)

I'm torn between finding new fellow travellers and changing dates to accommodate my original friends, but that means later in the year when there is less game. . . .

Never been to Kubu, but hear it's worth it. Bots side of Kgalagadi is on my to-do list.

:? :? :? :?
The journey is the destination
Re: Botswana - CKGR, Kubu, Kgalagadi
So this is what we are planning at this stage...
  • Khama Rhino Sanctuary - 1 night (if we can get a camp site)
  • Kubu Island - 2 nights (depending on if we can find something else to do, since we should be able to reach Kubu from Khama before 3pm)
  • CKGR - 6 nights (3 at Sunday, 3 at Piper)
  • Exit CKGR via Xade, and go West staying over in Ghanzi (also read that the trip south is boring, so we are exiting to the West)
  • Ghanzi to Kgalagadi transfrontier park (still need to find place to sleep over on the way, but thinking of entering via Kaa gate
  • Rest of the time in transfrontier park - this bit has not been finalised (any suggestions welcome)

Karl

If you are going to be entering and exiting Kubu from the South, one night should be fine. I would rather stay at Khama for 2 nights and use the spare day to do some game viewing. We quite enjoyed the stay there during our trip in 2010. (https://www.pajeroclub.co.za/forum/view ... =37&t=1160)

The haul from Kubu to Sunday pan will be a long one - start early!

Enjoy!!!!!

I agree with Johan by staying longer at Khama. It should not take you too long to get from Khama to Kubu. That being said, I don't know what the road conditions are like this time of the year (wet or dry) If it's wet it may take a while.

You are now busy with the lekker part of overland trips. The planning part. Use Tracks 4 Africa for trip planning as the drive times are pretty accurate.

2 nights at Khama seems to be the thing to do. Anyone have an idea how the road from Khama to Matswere / Sunday Pan will be like?

Then, any tips for a route from Kaa gate (KTP) back to Joburg over 5 days (skipping Nossob and Mabua if possible)?

We left Khama at around 07:00 and our camp was pitched at Kori (Deception) at around 16:00. We were a LARGE group and we are usually not in a big hurry (Mainly due to a certain Land R  ver! :D

You should be able to reach Sunday Pan in good time if you leave Khama early.
