Radiator in poor condition
Hi All,

I have attached some photos of the condition of my Gen 3 radiator after it has been cleaned (apologise about th epoor condition of the close up view). There are quite a few areas that look pretty damaged and the dealers (and now independently Silvertons) has suggested that I replace it.

Any comments from you clever fellow out there?

the top pic is a view from the front and the bottom pic a view form the back of the radiator
Re: Radiator in poor condition
How did it get to that state?
Somebody really manhandled that radiator, most probably when the engine was re-built.

(I always fit pieces of thin hardboard to the front and back of the radiator when working on the engine. Cable-ties through the core work well. Remove only once the radiator, fan and belts have been fitted).

Seeing your pics, I think it needs replacement, as well! :(

Is the one from Connocks copper/brass or aluminium?
I prefer the copper ones, because they can be fixed (soldered).

If they custom-make one up for you, get them to fit a 3-tier core, if possible.

Hi 4e

Yes it seems to have been damaged during the rebuild I think. Oh well live and learn. The guy did save me a lot of cash elsewhere (labour etc) when he fixed it for me so not going to complain too much.

I asked for a price for a copper 3 core but at twice the price can't justify it unfortunately.

Thanks again for the comments. As always they are greatly appreciated!

Yip,

I don't think any Pajero deserves to be cooled by that radiator.

A few questions still remain:
1)Did the fan clutch kick in? Was the "free spinning" fan actually in lock mode after the temp went up?

Was the radiator in this condition when it went in for the "overhaul" or did it get man handled after the overhaul?

It is the old story: you need airflow and you need coolent flow. There is good reason to believe you had poor airflow, we all hold thumbs that the coolent flow (pump) is fine.

Hi Roelf

Yes one look at that radiator (once it was out) and I was confident it needed to be changed.

I think it was damaged during the rebuild. To be fair it was very soft and brittle when I pushed on it and so the damage was probably caused quite easily.

Having said that though I am not 100% sure as this is really the first time I had looked at when it was out of the vehicle. So it could just as easily have been damaged when it was sent in for the acid bath.

I think that the fan had probably not had enough time to heat fully to operating temp before the engine started overheating. When thte fan was bolted it was working at greater than 100% efficiency from as soon as the engine was switched on. When the new viscous fan was put in it was only able to operate form when it reached its correct temp and by then was probably too late to have a great impact.

As you have siad I really hope this is the answer! Can't wait for another 200 000km of trouble free motoring. So far the pistons and rings have been replaced, as have the timing chaing and pulley. I also replaced the oil level sensor.

The injectors were checked and are operatinf perfectly within spec.

The intercooler has now been professionally cleaned and refitted.

It has a new radiator cap, thermostat, water pump and radiator.

She has also just had the gearbox serviced by the dealers and a new filter put inn.

The amazing thing is she now seems to pull a bit better than when I first bought her so I really hope the temp issues have gone and I can again cruise the Tkei in style :D .

Thanks to everyone for all the advice along the way.

Some better pics of the old radiator and one of the new radiator that is currently being fitted :)

A rather big improvement!

Same very steep test hill, very similar ambient temperatures, VERY DIFFERENT RESULT! This time with the new radiator and viscous fan fitted the temp gauge didn't even reach halfway!

Awesome!
