Re: Dealer p....s!
as I said previously "and so the story continues"

since my last post i have had the radiator replaced but the silverton guys told me i had a problem with electrolysis in the cooling system and that the new radiator would again be damaged if it was not sorted out.

this kicked me back into research gear and i decided that i would again flush teh system and fill with mitsu coolant and distilled water as apprently that is supposed to remove or greatly retard the problem of electrolysis.

so yesterdya i went to the dealers and bought some new coolant in a 4l bottle. i asked them the filling procedure for the cooling system and they told me to add the contents of that bottle (4l) and then fill up the rest of the system with water.

i decided to read the instructions on the bottle more carefully and they stated that my coolant is already premixed and no additional dilution is required.

so i posted about this on the forum last night and the 4ESenior responded that I was correct in my understanding that no water should be added to that product. Thoe whole cooling system must be filled with it.

So I diod a little diggin on the net during lunch today and found the following.....(remember that my issues started with the overfilling of my expansion bottle - only happened on long trips and particularly when I travelled to the inland sections of the E Cape - these are more elevated than where I live in EL).

What is bad about water in a coolant?
The boiling point of water is too low. There is very little separation between the operating temperature of the coolant and the boiling point of water for the pressure of the system. The boiling point of water is the failure temperature of the cooling system. Water vapor has almost no thermal conductivity. Water is aggressive toward cooling system metals and promotes electrolysis between dissimilar metals within the cooling system

as I explained above i discovered yesterday that the coolant that i bought from the dealers is not supposed to have water added to it...when i bought it last time they told me to add the 4l bottle they sold me and then to fil up the rest of the cooling system with water!

Incorrect! The instructions on the bottle and the whole system must be filled with their premixed product.

That means that i had a coolant concentration of 30% for the 4l of mitsu coolant added but that was then diluted by adding 5l of water.

and as the comment above indicates water promotes electrolysis in the system.

are you starting to get the picture?

another interesting little titbit of info is that too much water in the cooling system also decreases the boiling point of the coolant! Hmmmm.....as does altitude (remember my problem first showed itself when travelling at higher altitudes in the E Cape interior near Mt Frere and Kokstad area....Hmmm...I wonder if this could in any way be related to the fact that my cooling system is keeping the engine cool but that the coolant is continuously expanding and then passing into the expansion bottle! Almost as if the water is boiling out through the radiator cap..........

Could this be the solution I have been looking for.....after replacement of the radiator cap (R100), thermostat (R160), radiator (R 3600) (twice) and the viscous fan clutch (R 2500)....

Much holding of thumbs will be done tomorrow when my mechanic does a radiator flush and refills the whole cooling system with the premixed mitsu product (with no water added!!)

he he he.....always look at the bright side of life! :D

T/C,

Check the first response form 4ePikanini :D .

He asked about the coolant mixture.

Well spotted Roelf! At that stage I thought that was not an issue as was going according to the dealers instructions. Could possibly have saved a lot of time and hassle....

Re: Overflowing coolant expansion tank
Did the same 600km trip today and temps were quite high for 50% of the time (around 30degrees) and the level in the bottle/tank rose less than it used to (see attached pic and compare with pic on pg 3 of this thread). Changes since I last posted about this include a replacement radiator and the proper coolant to water ratio mix.

Level now seems to drop back to the full mark overnight so I think things may now be sorted. Will check again tomorrow morning and will update tomorrow evening

Thats the same rise i see on mine regardless of the weather or road conditions. Thats fantastic news but bad news for my anticipated braai! ;)

Re: Overflowing coolant expansion tank
yes lets hope things are resolved.

Will still have to have that braai Marius! 8-)

Will let you know when we can. Been away and had a bunch of houseguests from out of town the last little while but things should slow down next weekend.

Will chat to Kate and arrange to invite you guys over for a bit of wood burning activity :)

Maybe i should organise a potjie on the farm. I owe Jean Kotze one as well so we may have a lil potjie together. He used to have a pajero and miss it so i guess he qualifies. Hehe.
