Paj is at Mitspro, decided to replaace fuel pump and filter, price of pump not too expensive around R700 for a bosch unit. Will see if this does the trick.

I hope the decision was made on some diagnostic procedure and not "Replace-and-Hope" tactics!

Hi Gerhard,

It is somewhat based on hit and miss on this one, off to Kgalagadi in April and don't want to take any chances, got a 9 month old little 1 with us, so don't want to have the Paj dying on me for a fee of R700 that I skipped on. That way, I have a new pump, and a spare (if it is not the fault ), new filter and some other paper filter, so basically replacing all the most likely components and checking the routing and leaks. Not used as a daily drive so usually on the long road when used (due to being petrol and the fuel consumption), so next trip is the Berg and then Kgalagadi thereafter, so the Berg is the real trial befor the much longer trip planned which we are doing solo. I would usually go with the routine checks, but chose to go the very safe route on this one - I feel fuel problems and cooling problems are one of the worst to have in the middle of nowhere (among others), just because you are pretty helpless with these issues, or at least I am....

Have gone with the Bosch petrol pump as replacement and replaced the filter, so far so good, only time will tell if this resolves the issue I guess. tested out today, nice hot day and all still good

So far so good, no more fuel starvation issues, had a good test last weekend to the Northern Berg and back, had to tow my Cousins citi golf behind the Paj, which was towing my Venter Bushbaby at the time up some pretty steep hills. Towed the bushbaby and golf up some pretty steep hills en route to Injasuthi, Trailer was pretty heavy at around 800kg, Paj fully loaded and citi golf filled to the brim with camping gear. Man I love my Paj!!!!! Hooked up my tow rope under the trailer and had about 2m between the golf and the Bushbaby..... Did this for the last 6km before it levelled out, with slow going and hard working and no fuel starvation, temp stayed smack bang in the middle while working pretty hard to get up and over a few steep hills, sure my issue is now sorted!

Now just a few days before heading to Kgalagadi

OK Looks like fuel starvation issue is sorted after fuel pump replaced, have just done 3500km round trip with hot, slow, fast and hard working driving and no more issues. Would suggest reviewing this as a cause if you experience similar issues.

Hi all,

I recently bought a Pajero 1999 3.5 V6 Petrol LWB with just 73,000kms on the clock. It is in mint condition, but was standing for a long time in a garage. Sadly, having similar problems to @Davidvan.

To describe the issue, I am able to drive for a limited numbers of km's, and then progressively, I am unable to run the vehicle at more than 3000 rpm, and no faster than about 40kms an hour.

A Bosch fuel pump was installed a few months before I bought the car. To repair the current issue, I have followed the following sequence of repairs:

1. Installed new GUD fuel filter,
2. Car drove without issue for 60kms, and the problem started again,
3. Replaced the fuel tank with a good second hand, which I had professionally cleaned out (to remove any rust),
4. Car drove without issue for 100kms, and the problem started again,
5. Replace (new filter) with another GUD fuel filter,
6. Car drove without issue for 300kms, and the problem started again.

I am at my wits end and would appreciate any assistance/ advice.

Morning guys.

I've had a similar issue before with a different vehicle (Jeep Wrangler). Also had me completely stumped for a while.

Then an old mechanic told me that when it happens I should unscrew the fuel cap. If it makes a really big inrush of air, then it's likely the issue.

Tried it and success. It's also a very cheap fix.
