Western Cape GTG - Honingklip - March 2012
Just home from a great day at Honingklip near Bot River.

Was an excellent day, and thanks to Richard for being host and to Jaco for organising. And thanks to the ladies for adopting Caitlin for the day. Very nice to meet all the new people. Will post some pictures later.

Highlights...
  • There's something really special about the sound of 8 V6 Pajeros crawling slowly up a steep hill.
  • Colin proving he can lift a Hilift.
  • Aslam proving finesse is a myth
  • Colin showing the virtues of the front locker.
  • Rob showing line is everything
  • Caitlin shouting during a prticularly steep downhill section "SLOWLY DADDY!"
  • John showing that a black Shorty Gen3 3.8 is a car to lust after
Lowlights
  • Me trying to get through the same hole no less than 8 times.
  • Perhaps Hankook sidewalls are not as robust as they could be

What is the difficulty at Red Hill?
Traction?
Incline?
How many got up there?

Red Hill is very tricky with a few tree stumps in the way and one in the middle of the track. But if you get your line right it's relatively straightforward. There's quite a lot of loose sand and gravel - incline I would hazard at about 1 in 3.

Johan tried twice and gave up, Colin made it up without too much hassle but he has a front locker. The 3.8 shorty made it look like a doddle, and Aslam made it relatively easy but not with a lot of finess

I never tried it with the upcoming trip to the Richtersveld - not prepared to break anything a week before.

This should give you a better idea about Redhill.

Was that burgundy blister fender Aslam?

That was not a Pajero (grass cat), but a Oreotragus oreotragus

Big thanks to everyone who came out yesterday.

Was good to finally meet some fellow members and to be able to put faces to the names. I'm still pretty new to offroading, and this was the first time I drove a trail with a club. I really enjoyed the day - great trial with great views.

We must make a plan to have a couple more of these GTG's this year.
