Glow plug light
How long does your glow plug light stay on when you switch on your Gen 3 Pajero?

I've been to Battery Center and the guy said it must be glow plugs that cause it to turn about 5 times when I try to start it.

He connected a new battery and it did the same, he also tested the starter and it wasn't the starter.

Hot or cold, mine doesn't even come on for a second....... Is it good or bad.

Not good. Either the resistance on the plugs have changed (meaning they are shot) or the fuse or relay is shot.

Yip, thats not good news.

I can see see it come on but it goes out almost immediately

How much would I be looking at to replace either the glowplug or the relay?

Re: Glow plug light
you need to check

- glow plugs
- fuse
- relay
- temp sensor that feeds ecu. To see if operates correctly the easy test is to see if your idle butterfly is only operating when the car is warmed up. If it operates before the car is warmed up your temp sensor that feeds the ecu is faulty (there is a separate sensor that feeds the temp gauge in the dash)

check my thread here for more detail on the idle butterfly mechanism.

Re: Glow plug light
Thanks, I will check the butterfly first and then if that is right. I would need to get a mechanic to check the rest.

Or if you can maybe direct me in the right direction to check the other easy stuff

Re: Glow plug light
You can check the glow plugs as shown in the picture.

*Simply unscrew them one by one
*Attach red jumper cable to back of glow plug and battery
*Attach black jumper to side of glow plug and battery
*If functioning correctly, the point will glow red hot in a few seconds.

NOTE:

*Once the tip glows red, switch off immediately - do not let it glow for longer than that as it will damage the plug.
*If glowing red hot or heating anywhere else except the tip, then the plug is dysfunctional and needs replacement. Or does not warm up at all.

Re: Glow plug light
Thanks macjohnw.... I will try this.

I just need to find out where and how to unscrew the plugs.

look into the engine bay. On the right of the head between the tappet cover and the intake manifold you will see the glowplugs.

unscrew the 12v rail with 8mm socket, remove the 12v rail and then unscrew injectors with 12mm socket.

When putting back, hand tighten + 1/8th turn.
