Shifting from 4WD to 2WD drive on my 2001 Pajero 3.5 GLS
I went to do a 128point safety check on my vehicle as I noticed that when I switch from 4WD to 2WD the light on the panel console that shows if you are on 4W or 2W mode "flashes" - particularly the front wheel side. The rear wheel side still lights but solid (which I think is fine). My sense is that there is something wrong with my 2WD mode?

The shop came back to me after inspection and said that I need the following parts replaced (plus labour):
Idler Arm - R1295
Tie Rod Ends outer - R1295
Tie Rod Ends inner - R1195
Actuator 4x4 - no price yet
Valves 4x4 hubs - no price yet

Can someone please help explain to me what is the problem with my vehicle? And what is the most cost-effective way of doing the repair? Which one I should do first given budget constraints?

Thanks guys. Appreciate the help.

1. These items have nothing to do with your 4WD system:
Idler Arm - R1295
Tie Rod Ends outer - R1295
Tie Rod Ends inner - R1195

They might be worn, but that is one helluva price to replace them!
Take it to a "Suspension & Steering" specialist for a second opinion and quote.

2. I would insist on proof about what is wrong.
The flashing lights on the display are often a symptom of defective sensors, rather than a defective 4WD system.
Marius has a great thread on that, and I'm sure he will post it soon!

3. Do simple tests to see whether the 4WD modes are selected, regardless of the flashing lights.

How technical are you?
That will determine what advice we can give you.
If you are a non-techno type, I can only suggest that you find a friend who is not, or take the vehicle to a second (& third) workshop for an opinion.

Re: Shifting from 4WD to 2WD drive on my 2001 Pajero 3.5 GLS
When the transfer lever is moved, a sensor in the gearbox picks this up and relays the message to 4x4 ecu. The 4x4 ecu then sends the signal to vacuum solenoids who, in turn, sends the vacuum to the front diff actuator either via the one vacuum pipe or the other that enters the actuator diaphragm (to engage the front diff to the right front side shaft or release it when moved to 2H). The transfer case mechanism is completely mechanically operated by the transfer lever in the Gen2 models. In Gen3 and later models with the electric 4x4 control, the 4x4 ecu also sends the signal to actuators in the gearbox to engage the necessary mechanical linkages.

This is a broad location finder picture of the front diff. It should look almost identical through all the different years and generations of pajeros and colt pickups.

When the car is in "2H", this shafts (that is usually hidden under this boot) is pulled in towards the diff (towards the right in the photo). When in anything other than "2H " the shaft is pulled outward from the diff (towards the left in the picture)

The actuation of the shaft is done by vacuum. If you look to the left (as if standing in front of the car) of the boot that covers the actuator shaft on the front diff, you will see a diaphragm with two vacuum hoses attached to it.

When the vehicle is in 2H the vacuum pipe that exits towards the rear of the vehicle should be pulling vacuum and when the car is NOT in 2H the other vacuum pipe should be pulling vacuum.

These are the vacuum solenoids to the front diff actuator. They are located between the airbox and the front right headlight.

When the car is in 2H both electrical plugs should see 12volts and no voltage when in 4H

thank you guys... i really appreciate the advise and the technical knowledge being shared here.

i will certainly look at steering part replacements as a priority for now.

cheers!

Hi,
Am a novice here, but had trouble with my engaging 4wd (know you have the reverse issue) but what fixed mine is regular use... Ie fairly regularly engage 4wd and 2wd... After a month of doing this regularly, it works perfect now...
