Re: Fuel pump failure
Hi All,

When at Mata Mata, TonTon (Anton) had the same issue with his fuel pump relay which in the middle of nowhere becomes quite interesting.

The fuel pump relay can cause this issue, Anton was able to get a hold of Marius (4ePikanini) from the office phone, and we found the brown connector as per the above pic, but there was only a blue connector which did nothing with 12v applied unfortunately. The fuel pump will wine (make a whrrrrrrr noise) when the ignition is on and does not need to be started to make the noise. In troule shooting we use a battery stand alone battery with pump removed to confirm that the fule pump was working fine, couldn't trace the fuel pump relay and was not in Haynes manual for the Gen2 (only Gen3 is indicated in the Haynes). We managed to connect a Brad Harrison in the rear luggage area and power the pump that way, and disconnect the BH fuse when the vehicle is stationary and not running.

He left Mata Mata to Upington to the dealer to get this fixed properly and hope he got there safely, sure he will post when they are back and add some more input into the fuel relay - very handy spare part to take with you for a similar situation.

Test the fuel pump if your car appears to not be getting any fuel, relay or other component can be faulty which can leave you stranded.

Cheers

Re: Fuel pump failure
David,

I am back safely in Cape Town - thank you.

Guys, David really helped me a lot with his cool head and wide knowledge. He spent a whole morning of his preacious holiday time to help me. He brought his tools Hayes book, and even stripped an anderson plug (he hs another name for it - which I forgot) off his second battery kit to enable a bypass power supply to my fuel pump via my rear anxillary power point.

The "bypass operation" was a brilliant idea, and it worked like a charm.

The fuel pump relay relay failed without ANY warning - stone dead 25km from Mata-Mata. A good Samaritan with a Fortuner towed me in all the way to Mata-Mata, then David approached me early the next morning when I was helplessly looking at my very dead Pajero... He took control, assisted in tracing the problem, helped with the "bypass operation", charged my P's battery, and roundabout 12:30 the car was ready to go.

I went to Upington right away, and had the relay replaced there. It cost me only R340 (generic relay - no Mitsu part in Upington(!), labour included, (plus a tank petrol) at High Tech Auto Electrical Upington. The relay is situated inside the cabin, on the side panel at the left foot of the passenger - BEHIND the Computer. A rather weird place for a relay. The computer had to be removed to get to the relay.

Thanks to the guys of the club (David for his direct help, and Marius for the tip on the plug mentioned in the previous post (although my Gen 2.5 doesn't have a black plug, the concept triggerred the thought for a bypass), I could have my Pajero mobile within a day, and continue to ride the waves (corrrrrugatttttted roads) of Kgalagadi.

David, please thank your lovely wife for her good spirit and patience!

Regards,
Anton

Thanks for your kind words Anton, it was my Absolute pleasure and glad that I was able to assist. It was great to meet both you and your wife, and glad that your trip was able to continue without too much hassle. Learnt a lot in the process as well.

Re: Fuel pump failure
I have a problem on a 1994 Pajero 3000. It started with the refs going haywire. Then the problem: while driving after about 20 km the engine will cut out. I cannot switch it off as it will make a bad noise and the 4x4 will lock. If you stop, switch off and wait a bit the relay will click and you can start again and drive. However the time between stops will get shorter. The ECU and pump relay get hot. Except the replacement off the petrol pump, petrol filter and coil, the anti hijack was removed. The wires which are connected get very hot.
Tried to put this on the diagnostic machine but could not make contact.
Any ideas what can be the problem?

Easy thing is to put the ignition on and check for 12v at the fusebox and 12v at the fuel pump.

No 12v then trace the electrical. If you have 12v at the fuel pump ( and the fuel pump is not spinning - you will hear it if you crawl underneath ) then replace the fuel pump.
Hi

My voltage at the back of my pump is 9.28V. Battery is fully charged. Could it be a relay, that i cannot find.

Re: Fuel pump failure
Hi,i need some help with my pajero 3.2diesel. It was working fine and I just parked it at home.I went to start it again after 2 hours and didn't start.I discharged the batteries trying to start.I used jump starters from another car and nothing.Tried again many days but no started. I did check the fuel line and its ok up to the fuel cut solenoid valve. I took the valve out and bypassed but not working. So the fuel is cut somewhere after the solenoid valve. Can anyone give me a clue what to do please? Can the injection pump die instantly without any warnings?

Take the boost pipe off and check if the throttle butterfly opens while cranking
