Valve clearance
Hi,
how necessary is it to adjust the valve clearance on the 3.2DiD engine ?
2005 model, 168000km on the clock.
What will the effect be of doing it vs not doing it ?
How difficult is it to do myself ?
Neil.

Re: Valve clearance
let the dealer do it. It's less than R500 for them to do it.

If you get it wrong you can burn a valve or have a rocker come loose , possibly destroying the camshaft or jamming the timing chain, killing the engine.

I wouldn't attempt this myself. There is a fine art to this. Unless you have done a few in the past and are familiar with it, I'd have the dealer do it.

but what is the effect of doing it or not ?

Re: Valve clearance
Over time the clearances change and can cause noise, rob performance or burn valves!

Re: Valve clearance
Hi Neil,

What makes you think it should be done? Valve clearance should be checked from time to time, as the valve and valve seat wear the tappet clearance becomes less. This clearance must be maintained by adjustment. I agree with the blokes above, get it done if you are not 100% sure yourself.

Re: Valve clearance
Thx to all,
Im busy making up a list for one BIGGG!!! service as I dont know what the previous owner did and what not and there are some things bothering me.
To save some money (as this will cost about 10k if all done by a service shop) i want to split the list between what i can do and what the shop must do.
For this I'm reading up on the things to do and came onto posts about having the valve clearances adjusted while replacing the chain guide.
