Can you hill start / pull start a 3.2 DiD - manual?
Hi - I am having starter motor problems which will hopefully be sorted out tomorrow. It the meantime I though I would see if I could at least hill start the beast.

To clarify no voltage problems - battery lots of life - starter just doesn't have enough power to get it past first firing.

So in anticipation of tomorrows tow in I thought I would try a hill start to avoid this - got up to about 40 in second and dropped the clutch. Revs definitely high enough but engine didn't fire and all I got for my effort was the engine fault light coming on. To my relief it disappeared a few minutes later.

So question is : can you actually tow / hill start a manual gen 3 DiD - if so how/ what did I do wrong ?

Thanx Tim

Not sure what you did wrong, maybe your starter is not your problem as well, as I have hill started my 3.2 did manual without problem.

Are you 100% sure that the clamps are TIGHT around both battery poles. I have found that the one clamp is made of lead and over time stretch, becomming impossible to tighten. Even if just lightly loose it will not let enough power go through the system and the car will not start. Not even in hill start/towing type start.

Hi - clamp issue noted - definitely not my problem - one of the first things I checked.. mmmmm

Whats a correct hill start procedure then - ignition on - second gear has always worked for me ?

Ignition on and second or even third gear worked for me. Does the lights on the dash come on when you turn ignition on? What happens when you swing the motor with the starter? Does it turn the motor over?

Hi - all fine - no fault codes - turns out it is a sticky valve where the air pipe joins the manifold - damn EGR system has gummed up everything - have been meaning to blank it off for a while now - would have long time ago if I had know the hassle it would have caused ! Note to any high mileage pajero's - get yours done ! Starter motor also might need an overall but at least it is all "cheap stuff".
