Does anyone know when in the production(year)the 4m41 were switched to the newer type chain top guide?

Best is to then pull the tappet cover, turn the engine via the crankbolt clockwise and make sure the tensioner releases from the hook.
1. Are you saying that you can see the tensioner release if you have the tappet cover off?
2. What's best to remove compression - take the glow plugs out? or just loosen them or what? (And do they have any non-reusable gasket? / Require any sealant?).

glow plugs just get removed. No sealants or anything.andrew.ashton wrote:2. What's best to remove compression - take the glow plugs out? or just loosen them or what? (And do they have any non-reusable gasket? / Require any sealant?).
Remove power lead to rail
loosen all the 8mm nuts on the glowplugs
swivel glowplug rail out of the way
use extension and deep slim socket to remove glowplugs
NB : Retighten to handtight plus 1/8th turn. (They are not tightly bolted down.)
My top timing chain guide after 225,000km - I can barely feel the ridges. Oil pressure switch was also replaced today.
