Dear All
I have a 1996 Gen 2 3.5 v6 LWB. Over the weekend I discovered that the lifter noise has out of the blue increased to the extent that it sounds like a diesel. The lifter noise was always there and I am aware of the Delo "fix" but it has now developed into a steady ticking noise which intrudes into the cabin. What is also strange is that between 1000 to 2000rpm there is a sucking noise (which I can hear from inside the cabin with windows closed) which disappears after 2000 rpm whereafter it runs smoothly. It may be my imagination but it also feels a bit down on power/power delivery is not smooth.
Any comments/advice/suggestions are welcome.
Thank you very much in advance.
Atzala,
The lifter noise - how much oil do have in your vehicle?
Have you tried overfilling by some more of 500 ml? and see what happens then. How many km's on the clock?
The sucking noise : maybe you have a cracked manifold- remove manifold covers and check for cracks. It will be clearly visible. Also check exhaust connections especially where exhaust meets exhaust manifolds.
Secondly check your intake manifold on top of engine if all bolts are fastened and listen at the front if hear sucking of air in there. It can be that the butterfly bushes are worn and when it sucks air in the front where the vacuum valve is the throttle response will be slow, fuel consumption will also increase as the AFM will get the wrong signals and will continuesly adjust idling and revs will be irratic on idling.
Hope this helps

Thank you very much for the response.
I have topped the oil up to a few mm above the full mark.
Mileage is now 265k.
I am not that mechanically minded to remove manifold etc myself but I will have it checked out by the guy who works on the Paj.

A good way to check for a leak in the intake manifold is to spray some easy start or quick start on the joints, if there is a leak you will have a rise in rpm when you spray over the culprit area

Thanx for all the responses.
It appears that the valve lifters have to be replaced. I had the oil and filter changed but the noise remains. The noise is different and much worse than the "normal lifter noise" since I bought it so I think it would be best just to bite the bullet and change the lifters. According to the mechanic the oil was very thin when he drained it. The guys I took it to for the first service apparently used Castrol (I've done about 8k since then).
Anyway, dealers quote R5500 for the lifters and Masterparts just over R2000. Apparently, the dealers get their parts from Masterparts?
Do all the gaskets have to be replaced when the lifters are changed?

At the very least, replace all the intake manifold gaskets. With my last service I had these replaced and had gasket sealer put on.
The difference is night and day. My Pajero is no longer down on power and doesn't splutter any more. The power now is just so addictive.
I've fallen in love with my Pajero all over again.
