Electrical cooling fan vs mechanical
Hope someone can assist me to make the right decision here.

When i purchased my Pajero. The previous owner had removed the std mechanical fan and replaced it with a much smaller and ineffective electrical fan. As a result the car over heats, especially in the game reserve at low speed.

My question is should i remove it and replace it with an original mechanical fan rather?

It's most likely the previous owner fitted the electric fan to overcome these same over heating problems !

Find the real cause of overheating before it's a big and costly problem.

Thank you. You make a valid point however according to him he was trying to get more power out of the motor.

qoda,
I will not fit electric fan if I were you.
I tried that and had endless problems with it.
I fitted the origanal viscious fan and all my problems were sortd. If your car is overheating look for the cause first.

This line was discussed at length a year or two ago when Marius Fourie was trying to reduce the fuel consumption on his Pajero.

It is valid to reason that a motor could have a bit more power or save a drop of fuel (and run more quiet) with an electric fan, but then the unit must be powerful so it can manage low range crawling on a hot summer's day in Africa. A decently fitting cowling is the other part of the equation that is a must.

In the end the mechanical fan with viscous couple is the more effective

Re: Electrical cooling fan vs mechanical
All valid points. Think the best bet in to try and figure out if there may be another reason for the overheating. However one factor which leads me to believe the electrical fan is ineffective is that once i switch on the aircon the temp drops. But not enough on a really hot day.

Another thing is, the electrical fan was fitted without a cowling so airflow isn't distributed.

Thanks for the assistance. I'll report back with my findings.

Hi qoda,

IMHO the original Mitsubishi design is best.

As other posters have said, find out the underlying cause of the overheating - you may well find that your radiator needs rodding - check other threads - Silverton seem to be the goto place for this.

To be most effective a fan does need a cowl.

One thing to check in the meantime - I once bought a pre-owned Ford V6 powered Kombi with an electric fan. I couldn't understand why the temperature seemed to rise after the fan came on - until I did a bit of digging and found out that the fan was wired back to front so that it actually reduced the air flow when it came on!

Thanks Andrew. I actually checked for that this morning lol. Also checked at what point the fan activated. All that seems fine. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll get in touch with Silverton as well.

So I'm looking at close to R5000 for the part alone. The most expensive being the fan clutch (R2500).

I'll pop past Silverton today and see if they can look at it.

I've been attempting to get a working second hand viscous clutch, fan and cowling but that's turning into a bit of a mission.

If anyone has these parts lying around please let me know. Thanks
