Morning all, two days ago i did an oil change on my 3500 v6, changing to delo 400, since then the vehicle is smoking on idle and whilst standing in traffic, one can smell the oil in the smoke. Whilst driving on highway this smoke seems to dissapear and immediately after the highway driving i pulled off to check for smoke on idle and even revved it a little but then it was gone, however 5km later it was doing the same thing. There is no smoke on cold start ups. Could anyone give any advice on this as i am pretty worried about whats happening. Regards Ken
Ken,
What is the service history of your car? What oil was in use before the oil change?

Hi
You could be having warnout valve seals. To confirm this, let the engine run for some time, or drive it around. off the engine. When you start let someone check the pipe, a blue puff will come out, and disappear immediately. You will not see smoke when the car is running, but you may see it on trafic lights.
What is happening is, oil leaks through the valve seals since they are warnout, and this oil get burnt on top of the cylinders. so, when the car has stopped, the oil will burn, and when you start engine, that product of burning(smoke) will find its way out, very little of course.
Confirm this failure and address it immedialty. Am told it affects the rings if allowed to last long.
My 3500gdi 2003 had same problem. you have to buy overhaul gasket set at Mitsubishi.
Dont let that equipment smoke. enjoy
good luck.

Morning to you, thank you for the advice one thing i have noticed is that this is only occurring when the vehicle is "hot" nothing on start up and even if left to warm up for 10min before driving there is no smoke on acceleration (fast or slow), do you have any advice on where i can have the seals replaced at a reasonable pricePajeroby wrote:Hi

I recomend you buy guinine parts from Mitshubishi dealer, otherwise you will expericience problem again soon, if you use pirate parts .Mitsubishi will not only give you valve seals, you get overhaul gasket set for around R5000. All the gaskets from block will be replaced. They dont want you to re-use old gaskets. labour will take another R4800-5000, depending where you at. Mine was done in Botswana. Please get the right guy to do the job.
You will feel power since now oil will not be disturbing combustion.
Get another mechanic and confirm this before you buy mate. When did you start owning the car. I may have more advises if you new to the car.

It is a good car. very strong, and robust. dont let those minor issues spoil you enjoyment.
The car does not have the normal fuel filter we see in ordinary cars. The fuel leaves the tank and comes directly to the Fuel pump behind the engine. This is why it is called Gasoline Direct Injection(GDI). There is fuel filter inside tank(am told), which is rare to replace. Our fuel sometimes is not clean, and it can damage this Fuel Pump(R8500). My mechanic has therefore installed an R80 fuel filter just before this Fuel Pumper, to clean the fuel before it reaches the Fuel Pumper. I replace this extra fuel filter every 10k service. Otherwise you will sometimes have problem of block micro filters inside the Fuel Pump, and the car will go into limo mode. I dont access this forum most of time. you can drop me email at kmbo1900s@gmail.com.
My last advise. This is sensitive car. dont bush mechanic it, especially for engine. Get Mishubishi qualified Mechanic. In my country, the local dealer refuses to service it, for some reasons, i still need to investigate with Mitsubishi Japan, where I imported it. So, get one of those guys who works at local dealer, and he will do this car for you at home, no hussle.

My 3500 has 390000km, and shows the normal symptoms of high mileage 'idle-smoke & clicking-lifters'
It's scheduled for the inevitable head recon next month, but in the meantime I decided to try the vaunted delo 400: the smoke & clicking increased dramatically.
I've been using shell helix 25w/60 for years, so switched back and symptoms are back to 'normal'
I'm certainly not slating delo 400, just relaying the results of my test.
So I now have 4 litres of delo 400 free to anyone who collects in Edenvale Johannesburg
